TAPS SOUNDED FOR AN AGED VETERAN

Ara Foy Capitulated to the Universal Enemy

ALWAYS LIVED IN THIS VICINITY

His Record as a Citizen and a Soldier was Unsurpassed and to be Right was his Chief Ambition—Funeral.

The people of this community were greatly shocked Thursday when it became known that Ara Foy died at his home in East Randolph at 7 o'clock that morning. Mr. Foy had been in poor health for several weeks but was able to attend to his ordinary work until Tuesday when his indisposition assumed an acute form and he grew steadily worse until the end came.

The cause of his death was a complication of stomach troubles but little apprehension was felt regarding his condition as he had recovered from several previous attacks of a similar nature.

Ara Foy was born in Napoli on the farm now occupied by George Barber, June 27, 1833, and at the age of twenty-three years was married to Clarissa Hall of Coldspring. At the breaking out of the civil war Mr. Foy promptly responded to his country's call and he enlisted in the 9th N. Y. cavalry and served until after Lee's surrender. He was captured by the Confederates during a skirmish, but effected his escape and rejoined his command within a few hours. He was wounded during one of the battles in which his regiment was engaged and was for some time quartered in an army hospital. His war record is one of unswerving fidelity to duty and the principles for which he so gallantly fought. He was mustered out of the service June 26, 1865. After the close of the war, Mr. Foy engaged in farming with the exception of a few years devoted to the lumber business. For about twenty-five years previous to his death he lived at or near East Randolph and was regarded as one of the most substantial citizens of the community. Honest and upright in the minutest detail of business, genial and courteous to to his associates, he was esteemed and respected by all who knew him. In his family he was a devoted husband and father and his happiness was found in providing for the comfort of his loved ones.

Mr. Foy is survived by his wife, one son, Mr. J. H. Foy of Newark, N. J., a daughter, Miss Edith Foy of East Randolph and three sisters, Mrs. Harriet Harkness of Randolph, Mrs. Juliette Ransom of East Randolph and Mrs. F. L. Jefferds of Coldspring, and two grandchildren, Miss Bessie Foy of East Randolph and Glen Foy of Salamanca.

No funeral arrangements had been made at the time of going to press, but the services will probably be in charge of A. A. Hall Post, of which he was a member.

The funeral of Mrs. Clara Foy, who died Saturday, June 19, was held from the home Tuesday at 5 p. m., Rev. Harry L Dunlavy officiating. Clara Hall, daughter of Joel Hall, was born Dec. 20, 1829. Oct 16, 1856, she became the wife of Ara Foy, also of this place and their whole life had been lived in this vicinity. Four children, two sons and two daughters, were born to them: Louis, Mary, Joel H., and Edith. The first two died after reaching the age of manhood and womanhood. Mr. Foy died about three years ago. Mrs. Foy was also the last of her father's family living, a brother, Leverett Hall, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Kellogg, passing away less than four months ago, their deaths occurring just two weeks apart. Since the deaths of her brother and sister, Mrs. Foy's health had declined, although she was able to be about until Decoration Day, since that time she being confined to her bed. Her entire life was unselfishly devoted to home and family, and she was ever ready to do a kindly deed for neighbor or friend. Beside the son, J. H. Foy of Newark, N. J., and her daughter, Miss Edith, she leaves a grandson, Glenn Foy of Salamanca, and a granddaughter, Miss Bessie Foy of this place.
