Walter C. French, 87, of 18 Columbia av, a resident of this city for over three quarters of a century, died in a local hospital late Thursday afternoon following a brief illness. He was born in Fitchburg, Mass., June 18, 1863, son of the late Abel H. and Elizabeth I. French.
Mr. French came to Nashua when seven years old. He was married Jan. 27, 1886, to Jennie T. Newton of this city, who died May 15, 1944.
An employe of the Nashua Mfg Co for 46 years, Mr. French retired in 1939. He was a trustee of Woodlawn cemetery for 32 years and served as president for 18 years; served for a term on the Board of Education, and was one of the oldest members of Granite Lodge No. 1, IOOF, having joined March 2, 1885. Mr. French was an attendant of the First Universalist church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Robert N. French of this city, four nieces and a nephew. Friends are invited to call at the Farwell funeral home Saturday evening from 7 to 8.

Funeral service for Walter C. French was held in Woodlawn cemetery chapel Monday afternoon at 2:30. The service, which was well attended by relatives, friends and neighbors, was conducted by Rev. Denton J. Neily. Also in attendance were delegates representing Granite lodge, No 1, IOOF, officials and former co-workers of teh Nashua Mfg co, trustees and officials of Woodlawn cemetery and First Universalist church.
Bearers were Harold S. French, Lester L. Harvey, Stephen W. Bastow, herbert W. Snow, Charles S. Johnson and Fred L. Reed. Burial was in the family lot in Woodlawn cemetery where Rev. Mr. Neily offered committal prayers.
Farwell Funeral Service, Inc was in charge of arrangements.
