ROBERT GAY FALLS FROM ELEVATOR

STAGING OVERLOADED, GAVE WAY AND FALLS THIRTY EIGHT FEET, SUSTAINS SEVERE BRUISES

An accident happened at the Turner Bros. elevator yesterday evening a few minutes before quitting time that caused no end of excitement and fright for the time being.

Robert Gay was working on a staging 38 feet above the ground, receiving the material that was sent up for use in the building higher up. He had been on the job only a few days and the work was new to him. It seems that too much weight was allowed to accumulate on the staging and it gave way with a crash, Robert going with it to the bottom. His fellow workmen rushed to the bottom of the bin in which he had fallen expecting to find a lifeless mass but were greatly surprised when he spoke to them and said he was not hurt much. He was carried at once to the offices of Dr. Okerlin where it was found that no bones were broken. His right leg was badly bruised and a couple of other places on the body were scratched somewhat.

It was certainly a narrow escape and only a wonder that he was not killed outright. The only explanation of the affair is that he rode the staging down and thus escaped striking upon anything and upon reaching the bottom of the bin slipped from the planks in among some shingles and boards that were there.

Mr. Walker, the man in charge of the construction, feels terribly over the accident. He told the writer that he had followed the business of building elevators for twenty-seven years and this is the first accident he has ever had. The staging that feel had been in use for several days and was needed only a few more hours to complete its work.

Word from Robert this morning is that he rested fairly well last night and aside from being very sore and stiff is getting along as well as could be expected. It is surely what we might term another of those luck accidents and we wonder how the boy escaped being killed.

JAMES GAY TO LINCOLN, BOB GAY TO IOWA CITY

The Gay family has further been depleted by two of the boys leaving Essex recently. James, who for several months past has been working in the Commercial National Bank, has severed his connection with that institution and left the first of the week for Lincoln, Nebraska where he has accepted a position with the Lincoln Hotel where he worked for several years before he enlisted in the service. Robert returned to Iowa City where he will resume treatment at the state hospital. He has been home for several months and returns to the hospital in the hope that he may receive the treatment that will be of benefit to him and restore him to health and strength again.
