HANS E. BRANDT, 59, VETERAN HOSPITAL CHEF, SUCCOMBS

Stricken Suddenly Easter Morning While Directing Breakfast.

Hans E. Brandt, 59 years old, for fifteen years chef at St. Joseph's hospital, died suddenly Sunday of a heart attack suffered while he was superintending the preparation of breakfast at the hospital.

Altho Mr. Brandt had complained of not feeling well, neither he nor his family had thought his condition serious. Easter morning he went to work as usual. He fainted after he had got the plans for dinner will under way and the breakfast nearly ready to serve. Efforts made to revive him were fruitless and he died without recovering consciousness.

Mr. Brandt was born in Denmark in 1871. He came to the United States in 1899, bringing with him his wife and family. After a few months in Texas he came to Denver. Trained as a chef in his fatherland, Mr. Brandt followed that trade until his death.

Mr. Brandt leaves his widow, Mrs. Matilda Brandt, 1737 Franklin street; five daughters, Mrs. Katherine Langdon, Denver; Mrs. Ellen Radecliffe, Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. Ruth Charon, Bingham Canyon, Utah; Mrs. Margaret Whitehead, Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Bertha Remick, Oklahoma City; a son, Christian Brandt, Los Angeles, and eleven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon from the Olinger mortuary, with the Rev. George F. Sevier officiating. Interment will be made at Crown Hill cemetery. All of the out-of-town children are expected to come to Denver for the funeral.

Heart Attack Fatal to Chef at St. Joseph's Hospital

Funeral services for Hans E. Brandt, 59, veteran St. Joseph's Hospital chef, will lbe held in the Olinger Mortuary at 1 p. m. Thursday.

Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Brandt died suddenly of a heart attack Sunday, while he was overseeing preparation of breakfast at the hospital.

Born in Bonholm, Denmark, July 12, 1870, Mr. Brandt came to the United States with his wife and family in 1890. After a few months in San Antonio, Texax, they moved to Denver.

Mr. Brandt was chef in several hotels and restaurants here until 15 years ago, when he went to St. Joseph's.

He was a member of the Danish Brotherhood.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Matilda Brandt, 1737 Franklin st., Mr. Brandt is survived by five daughters and a son, all of whom will be here for the funeral.

They are Mrs. Katherine Langdon, Denver; Mrs. Ellen Radecliffe, Phoenix, Ariz.; Mrs. Ruth Charon, Bingham Canyon, Utah; Mrs. Margaret Whitehead, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Bertha Remick, Oklahoma City, and Christian Brandt, los Angeles. Eleven grandchildren also survive.

R. H. Grenfell, 67 Passes Away Monday

Richard H. Grenfell, 67, genial custodian at Central school, passed away Monday, October 16, at Lamb hospital, following a short illness. He was taken to the hospital Sept. 30 where he underwent an appendicitis operation. He was improving when he had a heart attack which caused his death.

Richard Hall Grenfell was born July 16, 1883, at Nevadaville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grenfell. He came to Golden when a child and for 30 years he was employed at the brickyard. For the past nine years he has been custodian at Central school.

He was united in marriage 16 years ago to Matilda Brandt of Denver, who survives him. Mr. Grenfell could tell many interesting tales of pioneer life in this region. At one time he worked in a mine and always kept his interest in minerals. He was most adept at making miniatures from such things as match sticks.

Services were held yesterday afternoon from the Woods chapel at 2 o’clock p. m. with interment at Crown Hill cemetery. The Rev. L. G. Burrus conducted the service. Surviving besides his widow are a step-daughter, Mrs. Ruth Charon, of Golden: four brothers, Thomas Grenfell of Iron Mountain, Mich., Will Grenfell of Esconoba, Mich, Fred Grenfell of Keewautin, Minn., and William Johns, Stanble, Mich.: three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Sampson, Virginia, Minn., Mrs. Gertrude Arnold, Kingsburg, Calif., and Mrs. Flo Grenfell, Quinnesec, Mich.; and two grandchildren, Willa Jean Charon and Shirley Charon Farrar, both of Golden.

Thomas Grenfell of Iron Mountain and Mrs. Margaret Peters of Abrams, Wis., came for the services.

Matilda J. Grenfell Of This City, Dies

Mrs. Matilda J. Grenfell of this city, died at the home of Mrs. Mary J. Wildman, 910 Twelfth St., Tuesday morning, March 13, after a long illness. She had been at the Wildman home since last January, and was previously a patient at the Dorothy Olssen Sanitarium for about three years.

Matilda Josephine Hanson was born in Sweden, September 22, 1876. At the age of 14 she came alone to the United States to make her home with a brother who was living in Rhode Island. She was first united in marriage to Carl M. Hasselgren, who passed away in 1908 while they were living in Colorado Springs. Later she moved to Golden and was married here to Richard Grenfell. He died over five years ago.

Mrs. Grenfell was a member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft and was a former member of the Columbine club of this city.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Frederick of 1119 Eleventh St., Golden, two granddaughers, Mrs. Shirley Farrar, Edgewater, and Mrs. Willa Jean Scott of Golden; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in the Woods Memorial chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Delbert Paulson officiating. Interment will be in Crown Hill cemetery.
