Fred E. Bement, 79 years old, three miles south of town, was fatally gored by a bull in his farmyard Sunday morning. Mr. Bement was going about the usual Sunday morning farm chores when the animal attacked him. His daughter, Edith, was in the house at the time but did not hear the commotion. A son, Earl, arrived on the premises shortly after the bull attacked Mr. Bement, and found the body of his father in the farmyard.
Mr. Bement was badly bruised about the body. It was believed that he was almost instantly killed by the bull.
He was a pioneer of this state, coming to South Dakota in 1884 and first making his residence near Valley Springs. There he resided for three years and in 1887 he homesteaded just over the line from Sioux Falls in Lincoln county.
He was born in Massachusetts, the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Bement, but came west with the earlier settlers.
Surviving are two sons, Earl and Howard, both of R. F. D. No. 3, and a daughter, Edith, same address; two sisters, Mrs. James Avery of Massachusetts and Miss Clara Bement, Sioux Falls, and two grandchildren, Betty and Edna. His wife, two sisters, and one brother preceded him in death. Mrs. Bement died in 1916. Mr. and Mrs. Bement were married at Denmark, Ia., June 13, 1888.
Services will probably be Wednesday at the Miller Funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Charles Gerlinger, pastor of the First Congregational church, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
