Kunkel—Firebaugh

Surprising their many friends in Staunton and Augusta and Rockingham counties, John Marshall Kunkel and Miss Virginia M. Firebaugh were married in Washington Monday, returning Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Kunkel are not visiting at the home of the groom's mother.

Mrs. Kunkel's parents reside near Harrisonburg and are members of the prominent Firebaugh family of Rockingham county. Mr. Kunkel is a son of Mrs. J. W. Kunkel, of Mt. Solon.

It is expected that they will make their home in Staunton, where Mr. Kunkel is in business, being manager of the J. P. Ast Hardware Company.

J.M. KUNKLE

John Marshall Kunkle, 93, of 10 Woodlee Road, died Wednesday morning (Feb. 19, 1986) at 4:45 a.m at his residence.

He was born June 23, 1892, near Churchville (Jennings Gap), a son of the late John Waddell and Bettie J. (Baylor) Kunkle. He was educated in the Augusta County schools and graduated from Dunsmore Business College.

Mr. Kunkle came to Staunton in 1918 and was manager of Ast Hardware until 1930 when he and some friends purchased controlling interest in Worthington Hardware Company. He became general manager in the late 1940s and retired in 1983, having been president of that concern for many years.

Mr. Kunkle was an Elder and member of First Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Staunton Zoning Appeals Board, and a member of the Shenandale Skeet Club.

He was also a member of the board of directors of the United Virginia Bank/National Valley and Community Federal Savings and Loan Association.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia F. Kunkle, whom he married on June 16, 1919; a daughter, Mrs. Henry B. (Nancy K.) Carey, Staunton; granddaughter, Susan Virginia Carey, Staunton; sister, Anna K. Yates, Spring Hill; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m Friday in Thornrose Cemetery by Dr. J.H.J. Vernon.

Active pallbearers will be: Joseph K. Alexander, Robert N. Blankenship, Henry B. Carey, Joe E. Huffer, Warren Maiden, Walter H. Ralston, James E. Taylor, A. Taylor Weller, and Reginald L. Yates.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Ashby T. Atkinson, Eugene B. Bradshaw, Harry B. Kaylor, Jack C. Knowles, H. Thomas Ritchie, Howard Shull, Carlyle E. Wilkerson, Percy H. Willson III. Dr. John H. Zadrozny, and Dr. Preston C. Manning Jr.

Virginia Margaret Firebaugh Kunkle, 100, 1430 Dogwood Road, Staunton, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at the Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.

Mrs. Kunkle was born Jan. 25, 1898, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late John Robert and Lelia Rodgers Firebaugh.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and was the oldest living member. She was a member and past president of the Silver Cross Circle of King's Daughters' Hospital and a member and former president of Oakenwold Garden Club.

Her husband, John Marshall Kunkle, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy K. Carey, Staunton; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Drs. A. Taylor Todd and Randolph Harrison will conduct a graveside service at 10 a.m. Monday at Thornrose Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Frederick St., Staunton, Va., 22401.

Arrangements are by Hamrick Funeral Home in Staunton.
