A number of Miss Lena Scott's friends, including several from Des Moins and Adel, enjoyed a very pleasant time at her home in Redfield, Monday evening, the event being her birthday. During the evening Miss Lena was presented with a handsome pair of roller skates by the party, and later a splendid supper was served. The evening was heartily enjoyed by all present.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11.—James Alden Miller, well known as a former publisher and editor in the Middle West and California for more than half a century, died in a Pasadena hospital last night at the age of 81.
At one time Mr. Miller was city editor of The Kansas City Times, held a similar position on The Des Moines Register and served later as editor and publisher of The Railway Conductor, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
In 1898 he came to California and served as editor and publisher of The Long Beach Press. He later was secretary of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. In 1912 he became editor of The Pasadena News.
Mr. Miller was born in Kansas City, Mo., and was graduated from the University of Iowa. He leaves a widow.
