Dr. A. B. Price, Dentist Here Nearly Half Century, Retires

Dr. A. B. Price, 77-year-old Richmond dentist of nearly a half century of service, is closing up shop.

He has purchased a home in Modesto, Calif., where a daughter lives, and plans to start living there in October.

"I don't know whether I'll be tired or retired," he said with a grin, "but I am not going to practice any more dentistry."

Mrs. Price already is in California with their daughter, Mrs. R. G. Shiell.

Dr. Price is packing his furniture now from his office, 810 South A street. He is "junking," to use his own words, much of his equipment.

"But I am giving some to a young dentist out in Pennsylvania in whom I have been interested since he was a boy. He is Dr. Russell E. Grant," Dr. Price said.

One More Appointment

The veteran dentist said he had one more appointment, which he will take care of probably this week, and then he will be finished.

When he started practicing dentistry here in 1900, there were only 15 other dentists. Now there are nearly twice that many.

As far as Dr. Price can recall, he is one of three of the original 16 still living, and the only one who remained in Richmond. Dr. Homer Hussey is now in New Jersey and Dr. W. A. Parke is in St. Petersburg, Fla., Dr. Price said.

Dr. Price's first office was in the old Dr. O. P. Baer office at the southwest corner of South Eighth and A streets, now the site of a filling station. It was somewhat a doctor's corner. Dr. Joseph Iutzi had practice there. So had Dr. George H. Grant.

Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Price said he felt there were as many people who took care of their teeth in earlier days as there are now. And there were about as many who neglected them, too, he added.

Like most dentists, he believes woman make better patients than men.

"More grit," he explained.

Children Frightened

Dr. Price said he felt children often were needlessly afraid of trips to the dentist by unwise comments of parents.

Dr. Price practiced a year at South Eighth and A streets and then went to the Colonial building, where he remained until the early 1930's. Then he moved to South A street.

Taking care of the teeth of children of patients who themselves had been treated by him in their childhood has been a common occurrence for Dr. Price.

"I have had the family of one woman through five generations. I treated her grandfather, who was an old man when I started practicing. I treated her mother, the woman herself, her son, and her son's child," Dr. Price recalled.

Dr. Price is a native of Brookville but came to Richmond with his parents when he was still a boy. He graduated from local schools, attended Indiana university in 1892 and 1893 and was graduated from the Indiana Dental college a few years later.

Mrs. Price is the former Florence E. Coffin of Toledo. Their daughter is their only child. Mr. Price's father was Melville C. Price.

Interested In History

History and flowers have been two of Dr. Price's hobbies. He has contributed valuable material to this paper's history column, including data used in a series of articles a few years ago on early dentists of Richmond.

Dentists used to have some novel means of advertising, Dr. Price recalled.

One was Dr. M. C. Armstrong, of Brookville, who built a huge set of false teeth, several feet wide and about two feet high, out of wood. By use of water motor, the teeth moved up and down much after the fashion of a person chewing.

"But that was a long time ago," Dr. Price smiled.

Until he leaves for California, Dr. Price is making a temporary home with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert H. Price, 125 South Ninth street.
