Dr. A. J. Provost

Dr. A. J. Provost of Oshkosh, a member of the Order of Railway Conductors No. 211, of this city, who has been serving as a captain in the medical department of the United States Army for the past year, passed away Monday at a hospital in Hot Springs, Ark. Death was caused by complications of ailments starting with stomach trouble. He had been located at Fort Bliss, Ark., near El Paso, Tex., and had been ill about a month. A week before his death his condition became improved and it was deemed wise to have him removed to the hospital at Hot Springs. As he condition again became alarming, Mrs. Provost was mortified and went at once to Hot Springs. Their daughter, Mrs. W. B. Owen of Chicago, was advised and also went to that city. Both were with Dr. Provost when he passed away.

Dr. Provost was born in Dodge county, his parents residing in the town of Theresa. He was born January 14, 1863, and was therefore 55 years of age. Later his family removed to the town of Menasha and still later to Rudolph, Wood county. After attending the elementary schools he left home and attended high school and later went to work as a railway conductor. In this way he accumulated means to take a medical course and was graduated from Rush Medical college.

He practiced his profession at Monroe and was married to Miss Nell Sutherlan. The couple moved later to Monticello, where their daughter was born, and still later to Merrill, where Dr. Provost practiced for several years. They moved to Oshkosh 20 years ago and since that time Dr. Provost had practiced exclusively as a doctor of eye, ear, nose and throat ailments.

He enlisted in the medical department of the army about a year ago and was in charge of eye, ear, nose and throat cases, first at Fort Riley, and later at Fort Bliss. During all the time he practiced at Oshkosh he was surgeon for the Soo line.

Dr. Provost was well known by railroad trainmen of this city. Some who are members of Division No. 211, Order of Railway Conductors, and were acquainted with the doctor, attended the funeral, which took place at Oshkosh this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
