We are called upon this week to publish an obituary of Mr. J. A. Shedd, of Denmark, Iowa. Mr. Shedd was the father of Mrs. Snively and the father-in-law of Mrs. Shedd, who now lives at Mrs. Snively's and whose husband recently died here. We had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Mr. Shedd, a few years ago, while he was on a visit here. He was a man whom no one could meet without feeling much impressed with the great soul that beamed forth in his every word and act. With a heart kind beyond measure, yet he was simply invincible in his convictions of right and justice. He took great interest in the early anti-slavery movement, and was an Abolitionist when it cost a man his reputation to be. He was an intimate friend of Chief Justice Chase, at whose house he was a frequent visitor, as well as of Ben Wade, Thos. Corwin, and other great Free Soil men of Ohio, whose confidence and esteem he fully enjoyed. A victim of dyspepsia, he had to give up professional life early, and retire to the quiet of the farm. He had three sons and two daughters. All of his sons went into the army, at the breaking out of the rebellion, the youngest of whom lost his life in the service. The eldest recently died here, and the other is living in Nebraska. Mr. Shedd was written some very interesting articles for our paper. We had come to regard him as a valued friend, and though he had lived much longer than the state of his health had given reason to hope, yet we regret to hear of his death.
