This community was shocked last Friday to learn of the sudden and rather unexpected death of Mrs. E. V. Snively, which occurred that morning at her home, 605 North 18th street, St. Joseph. She had been affected with bronchial troubles for several years, but her case was not considered so serious as it terminated. Deceased was born at Dayton, Ohio, and was 56 years old. She removed from Ohio to Iowa when quite young, and was married at Denmark, in that state, December 25, 1872, to E. V. Snively. Prior to that time for more than a year she taught school in Wathena. Five children with her husband survive her. They are E. V. Snively, of Unionville, Mo.; Emma, Alice and Eunice, of St. Joseph, and Helen, of Chicago. All but Miss Helen were present at her death. Mrs. Snively was a splendid lady and had a wide circle of friends here, where she was most highly respected and esteemed. Funeral services were held at the family residence in St. Joseph, Sunday, and burial was at Oakland cemetery.

E. V. Snively died at 5:15 Saturday evening, February 19, 1910, at his residence, 925 S. Ninth street, St. Joseph, Mo., aged 72 years, 4 months and 5 days.
He was interred at Mt. Mora cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock.
Rev. Kettle of the Congregational Church conducted the funeral service, and Mrs. L. L. Weakley sang beautifully "Abide with Me" and "face to Face," songs he repeated the day he died. The minister in closing spoke of how he remained undaunted in the face of difficulties that would have discouraged most younger men, and how he was always optimistic, with a good word for all. Notwithstanding hardships received at the hands of business associates, he still loved mankind and to the day of his death trusted his fellow man.
Beset all his life with many vicissitudes, he met and conquered them with indomitable courage, integrity and honesty. Few men had warmer friends or more of them.
Mr. Snively was born Oct. 14, 1837, in Washington county, Maryland. He came to Wathena, Kansas, in 1869, where he engaged in the milling and grain business, of the firm of Snively & Hedges; later Snively & co. He owned an extensive line of elevators along the Grand Island railroad during its early days. He also had large interests in the coal mines of Loomis, Snively & Co., Bevier, Mo. At the time of his decease he was sales agent for the T. C. Kellar Coal Co., of Chicago. At his advanced age he still displayed marked business ability and dictated letters and conducted his business even on his death bed.
On Dec. 25, 1871, he married Harriet A. Shedd, of Denmark, Iowa, who died Feb. 26, 1904. Mr. Snively is survived by five children—Howard V. Snively and Mrs. Mervin T. Miller of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. J. S. Taylor of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Misses Emma and Eunice Snively of St. Joseph, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Sue Lovell of Benevola, Md., and Mrs. Sarah Warner of Parkersburg, West Va. His four daughters were with him during his last illness, of more than a week.
