On Tuesday, September 24th inst., of typhoid fever, Mary E. wife of J. A. Shedd, jr., of this place in the 30th year of her age.
We cannot insert the above announcement without offering a few words of sympathy for our friend and neighbor, our fellow citizen and brother, who has at this time a heavy burden of grief to bear. His infant and only son was taken from him but a few days ago, and now he is bereft of wife and left alone in this cold world. We but speak the feelings of this whole community in offering sympathy and condolence, but words of man are weak and empty sounds—he still must suffer alone, and seek consolation only in the hope of a re-union above.

Died, at the residence of Mr. E. V. Snively, in Wathena, Kansas, Thursday evening, June 8th, 1876, James A. Shedd, of encephaloid tumor, in the 39th year of his age.
Mr. Shedd came to Wathena three weeks ago, where he could receive kind attention and sympathy among his relatives until the result of his affliction could be determined. He had been an invalid for more than two years, during which time tow surgical operations were performed upon the tumor; the first, last August at Boonville, Mo., and the other at St. Louis just twelve weeks before he died. At the last operation the surgeons would give him no assurance that he would ever rise from the table alive, or that the tumor, which involved the tissues of the stomach, would not reappear; yet he submitted to the operation with a great deal of fortitude. The surgeons said that if the tumor returned it would do so within two months, in which case there was no hope for his recover, whereupon he came to Wathena to await the critical period. He was able to ride out and go to his meals until within ten days of his death, and he has always been able to attend to business except for one month of last year and three months of this. His death was occasioned by the third growth of the tumor. He bore his affliction with unusual patience, and died in full consciousness of mind and peace of soul, with the Christian's hope that a mansion had been prepared to receive his spirit in the Father's house on high.
Mr. Shedd was a brother of Mrs. Snively, of this place, and a partner of Mr. Snively in the lead mining business near Boonville, Mo. He leaves a wife, whose attentions were most devoted to him, to mourn his loss. A man of regular and temperate habits, he had a wide circle of friends and was respected and esteemed for his manly worth and many virtues by all who knew him.
Funeral services were held at Mr. Snively's residence yesterday, and largely attended by sympathizing friends, after which his remains, accompanied by his wife and Mr. Snively, were taken to St. Joseph and started for interment to Fort Scott, where he has children and friends buried. He had no children living.
