C. R. Staley, 69, Dies Tuesday

C. R. Staley, 69-year-old electrical appliance store owner and long-time resident of Vernon, died at 9:15 a. m. Tuesday in a local hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. Wednesday in the Sullivan Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Kenneth Teegarden, pastor of the Central Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in East View Memorial Park.

Morris Vessells, John Naylor, Jim Armstrong, R. J. Hawk, Carl King, Bennie Fields, Frank Hildebrand and P. W. Hendrix, all of Vernon, and Paul Barnett of Amarillo will serve as pall bearers.

Mr. Staley is survived by two sons, T. C. and C. M. Staley, both of Vernon; one daughter, Mrs. R. J. Hawk of Abilene; four sisters, Mrs. Eva Whatley of Amarillo, Mrs. Beth Brown of Grants Pass, Ore., Miss Phebe Staley and Miss Grace Staley of Euphrata , Wash.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A sister-in-law, Mrs. Anna B. Staley, has made her home at the Staley residence for the past several years.

After coming to Wilbarger County from his birthplace in Waterville, Kans., around the turn of the century, Mr. Staley became interested in the oil business, and owned extensive oil holdings for a number of years. He married Miss Fleeta Greene of Vernon in 1904. She preceded him in death on June 25, 1950.

Mr. Staley was the second man in Wilbarger County to own an automobile. He drove a new two-cylinder Buidk down Vernon's Main Street in 1908, which helped usher in a new mode of transportation here. He also was the first gasoline dealer in the county.
