Court Grants Divorce To Merle Van Tassel

Merle Van Tassel was granted a divorce Thursday afternoon in circuit court from Newman A. Van Tassel on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment as well as non-support. The action was contested, Judge Robert S. Cowie announcing the decision after conclusion of presentation of testitmony.

Mrs. Van Tassel was granted the custody of the two children. She will receive $5 alimony and $10 for the support of the children each month, according to the court decision.

MRS. MERLE E. VAN TASSEL

Mrs. Merle E. Van Tassel, 81, formerly of La Crosse, died Tuesday, Aug. 1 in Milwaukee, where she had most recently lived.

She was born in Monroe Jan. 1, 1897, to Benjamin and Octavia (Gray) Sutherland.

She was a widow, with survivors including one daughter, Mrs. William (Jessica) Zunke of Cedarburg, a former Wisconsin Eastern Star grand matron, and four grandchildren.

Private graveside services were this morning in Valhalla Memorial Park, Milwaukee. Fass Funeral Home, Milwaukee, was in charge of arrangements.
