Mrs. P.J. Weirich, Club Leader, Dies

Lifetime of Service Covers Wide Field

Mrs. Paul J. Weirich, 72, of 2113 11th street, wife of the president and general manager of the United Telephone Co., died yesterday at 7:30 a. m. in St. Clare hospital after a long illness.

She entered the hospital April 6 for medical treatment after suffering severe bruises in a fall at the residence. She had been in failing health for more than two years.

The former Jessie Sutherland, Mrs. Weirich was born Oct. 39, 1878, on a farm near Albany, the daughter of B. J. and Emma Webb Sutherland. She attended school there and in Brodhead, graduating from Monroe high school in 1897.

Married in June, 1900

The Weirichs were married in the Monroe Methodist parsonage June 26, 1900, by Rev. George W. Case. The couple resided in Milwaukee where Mr. Weirich was employed by the Wisconsin Telephone Co. and moved back to Monroe in 1902 when he joined the United Telephone Co.

During both world wars, Mrs. Weirich was active in Red Cross work and had charge of the post office quarters and was county chairman of the knitting department.

Mrs. Weirich was a past matron of St. Omar Eastern Star chapter and a past president of Monroe Women's club.

She was one of the founders and a past regent of the Daughters of American Revolution chapter here. Always interested in genealogy, she certified records of many members and won state-wide recognition for this type of study.

Organized State Group

Another of her interests was the Woman's Relief corps in which she served as president in 1930. Mrs. Weirich also organized the CAR, state-wide organization for children, and was a state officer. She was active in the Universalist church and the Aid society.

One of her greatest interests was in the Greenwood Cemetery association. She succeeded Miss M. Alice Treat on the board May 8, 1923, and served until ill health forced her retirement last January.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Weirich leaves a daughter, Mrs. Helen Northrup, Waupun; one half-sister Mrs. Merle Van Tassel, Milwaukee; two half-brothers, Herbert Sutherland of Wisconsin Dells and Alvin T., Madison, and two grandchildren, Robert and Richard Northrup.

Services at the Shriner-Neushwander funeral home will be at 2 p. m. tomorrow. Rev. John MacMartin will officiate and services also will be held by the Eastern Star. Burial will be at Greenwood.
