George Burdette Woodard, of Duncanville, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the Methodist Mansfield Hospital, at age 90.
Visitation will be at the Groesbeck Funeral Home on Monday, March 18, 2013, from 10:30 to 11:30 A.M., before departing for Cobb Cemetery. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 Noon at Cobb Cemetery.
George was born January 7, 1923 in Little Valley, New York, to George Benjamin Woodard and Hazel Lidia (Sprague) Woodard. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corp during World War II, and was trained as a flight navigator. He was stationed at Randolph Field, Texas and was a 2nd. Lieutenant until he was honorably discharged in December 1945.
George met his beloved wife, Frances Margaret Harris (from Groesbeck) in Dallas while he was in the service. They were united in marriage on October 4, 1946. They made their home in the Dallas and Duncanville area the rest of their life.
George worked in the printing industry as a lithographer, and the children remember copies he brought home of cook books, catalogues, and even programs for the Barnum Bailey Circus.
George loved being a weekend farmer, bringing his wife and children to his wife’s family farm near Red Hill. He loved to work on the farm on his tractor, and especially loved to fish while he was at the farm.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Lee Woodard and Frederick Woodard and his sister, Gen Robertson; and his wife Frances, on April 6, 2009.
He is survived by three daughters, Karen G. Chapman of Garland, Janice L. Bozman and husband Butch of Jersey Village, and Donna J. Smith and husband Scott of Midlothian; and a son, David L. Woodard and wife, Kelly of Midlothian. Also, eight grandchildren: Shelley Bernhard and husband Brad of Dallas, Jenni Hickman and husband Will of Houston, Leslie James and husband Jason of Mesquite, Kelly Essary and husband Chad of Richardson, Lindsay Woodard of Midlothian, Seth Woodard of Midlothian, Garett Smith of Midlothian, and Jessica Smith of Midlothian; and nine great grandchildren: Ethan, Evan, Jake, Emma, Sarah, Rachel, Ryan,William, and Abby. Also surviving are his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James E. and Claudis Harris of Groesbeck, five nieces, 1 nephew and his beloved dog, Matie.10017
