Pioneer Reno Countian Dies

George Kirkpatrick Cogswell, 82, pioneer resident of Reno county in the Pretty Prairie community, died in his home, 809 North Cleveland, at 9:40 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Cogswell was born in La Harpe, Ill., June 24, 1867, and came to Reno county with his parents when he was 15 years old.

Mr. Cogswell came to Johnson county, Kansas, with his father, the late M. H. Cogswell, in the early 70's. In the spring of 1882 the family moved to a farm near Pretty Prairie.

The family came overland from Johnson county and Mr. Cogswell rode a pony and drove the cattle from there to the farm four miles east of Pretty Prairie. He broke sod with an ox team and helped in all the ways of a pioneer in developing the country.

Except for brief periods of a few months he had been a resident of Reno county continuously since 1882.

In 1896 he purchased an 80 acre farm west of Arlington, later selling it and returning to farm his father's land near Pretty Prairie. In 1899 he bought 160 acres four miles north and east of Pretty Prairie. He owned this only a short time, and in 1900 moved to the farm he bought that year adjoining the townsite of Castleton.

Most of the townsite of Castleton was platted from his land, and he started and operated for a number of years, various, business ventures including the building of about half the houses in the town at the time he left it in 1912.

He was a veterinarian, of the old school, having served an apprenticeship, and when the new law went into effect he was permitted to practice under the "grandfather" clause. He enjoyed a good practice from Pretty Prairie to South Hutchinson, until he retired, in the late 20's.

After selling out in Castleton, he built a new home in Darlow and purchased a 205 acre farm just over the line in Kingman county. After leaving Darlow in the 20's he moved to Hutchinson.

On May 6, 1888 he was married to Eliza Jane O'Leary of Castleton.

Four children were born. The children of this marriage were Carl C., of Topeka, Grace E., now Mrs. John Hayes, of Hutchinson, Dr. Faye C. Nicklin, wife of W. E. Nicklin, Hutchinson, and Guy K., of Washington, D. C. There are nine grandsons and three granddaughters, six great grandsons and eight great granddaughters.

Mrs. Cogswell preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 1927. A few years later he married Elizabeth Irwin of Hutchinson. She survives.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a. m. Monday in the Church of the Brethren at Darlow. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery. Rev. H. G. Ritzen will officiate.
