Alice Cole

1904-1983

Alice McShane Cole, 79, Evansville, retired secretary to the publisher of The News and The Star, died March 24 at her home.

Miss Cole, formerly of Indianapolis, began her career of more than 27 years with Indianapolis Newspapers Inc. in 1939. She was secretary to the late C. Walter McCarty, former executive editor and president of The News. She retired in 1966 as secretary to Eugene S. Pulliam, publisher of The News and The Star.

A gardening enthusiast, she cultivated zoysia grass.

Miss Cole especially enjoyed Christmas and traditionally had a large tree featuring 300 birds. She invited friends to her home to see the tree and share refreshments.

She was a bridge player and antique collector.

Ziemer-Shears Funeral Home, Evansville, is assisting with arrangements.

Survivor — sister Mrs. Francis Thompson.
