Solomon Sentinel, August 29, 189410966
On Thursday evening, August 23rd, 1894 at First M. E. church, Salina, Prof. Geo. J. Hagerty to Miss Edith Collins, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs.A. P. Collins.
The interesting ceremony was performed by Rev. C. E. Liue. The bridesmaids were Misses May Collins, (sister of the bride), Mary Bishop and Harriet Thompson. The groomsmen were Messrs. O. E. Collins, C.H. Matson and W. M. Stulz.
The bridal pair were the recipients of many elegant presents.
They started for Culeago and other eastern points the same evening and will return to Salina on or before Sept. 20th.
Mr. Hagerty is professor of Latin and Greek at the Wesleyan University.

The incorrigible old bachelor John L. Bishop surprised a good many in Salina by going off and getting married. It was thought he was beyond redemption, and while he did not dislike womankind it was thought he preferred single blessedness.
Congratulations are in order and are liberally extended.
As he has accumulated a fine inheritance, starting with nothing, so married life will be with him a thorough business proposition and he will show the traits of the husband in the best sense of the word.
The marriage was celebrated at Riverside, California, at 8 o'clock on Tuesday evening. The bride was Mrs. George A. Haggarty, daughter of Ona. A. P. Collins, who formerly represented this county in the Legislature. Mrs. Haggarty was the relict of Prof. George A. Haggarty, a teacher in the Wesleyan College at Salina, and they removed to California, for his health, and he died there about two years ago.
Miss Collins and Mr. Bishop attended this school together in Salina, and the rest can be imagined—an inspiration of youth.
Without spreading the news Mr. Bishop left Salina Sunday morning and at Topeka barded the Santa Fe Limited and was married in an hour following his arrival at Riverside.
They will make their home at High gove California, the home of the bride.
Reports are that he will remain in California a year and others that he designs not to return to Salina at all, except as he or they may visit here.
But this is very much a question, for he is not given to detailing his private affairs. He has large property interests here and this it is stated he will not dispose of. Let this be as it may, we wish him well. John is quite a progressive man, and his absence from this town will leave a vacancy.

RIVERSIDE, Jan. 27—Prof. George J. Hagerty, once well known in educational circles in the Middle West, died yesterday at his home in Highgrove, four miles northeast of here. He was 46 years old.
A native of Ohio, Mr. Hagerty graduated from the Ohio Wesleyan university in 1885, and was engaged in collegiate work at Abingdon, Ill. Early in the nineties he was elected to the chair of Greek and Latin in the Kansas Wesleyan university at Salina, Kans., and afterwards became president of that institution.
Ten years ago his health began to fail, and he was given a year's leave of absence for travel in Europe. That did not restore his health sufficiently for him to take up his educational work and he came to Riverside and has since engaged in orange growing.
He leaves a widow and two children.

Mr. Bishop, who was 67 years old, had been gravely ill for some time. Last March he underwent an operation but his hopes that it would improve his health were vain. for he has weakened gradually since that time. Death came to him at 10 o'clock yesterday morning.
He was born in Salina, Kas., and spent the larger part of his earlier life in that district, becoming widely known in business and political circles. He never aspired to a public office, however, preferring to participate in the public words as an individual.
Coming to Riverside in 1910, he at once entered vigorously into the activities of the city and county. His periods of service as president of the county farm bureau and the fair were outstanding in those two organizations. He was for three years a member of the executive committee of the Present Day club.
In 1910 he married, Mrs. Edith Collins Haggerty, sister of A. N. Collins and F. N. Collins, of Riverside, and daughter of Mrs. J. W. Covert of Riverside. She survives her husband.
The family moved to Hollywood about 12 years ago. Mr. Bishop has been in retirement there since that time.
Besides his widow, Mr. Bishop is survived by two brothers, Richard, and Norman H., and a sister, Emma Bishop, all of Los Angeles; and two children, Horace H. Haggerty and Mrs. Robert Henry Gurr, both of Hollywood.
