RIVERSIDE, March 18.—A. P. Collins, for more than thirty years a participant in Central Kansas political affairs, but for the last six years a Riverside orange grower, died last night of heart trouble.
Mr. Collins, who escaped from Andersonville prison during the Civil War, having been captured while a lieutenant in the Twelfth Michigan Infantry, was author of a volume entitled "Beyond the Lines; or A Yankee Prisoner Loose in Dixie."
He served four years in the Kansas Legislature and ten years as a member of the State Board of Agriculture. Shortly before Mr. Collins' death his daughter, Mrs. Edith C. Hagerty, was married at his bedside to John L. Bishop, a businessman of Salina, Kan.

Following a brief illness, John W. Covert, 88, pioneer orange-grower of Riverside and at one time a member of the city council, died yesterday afternoon at the Riverside Community hospital. He became ill Friday night at his beach home at San Clemente, where he had gone for a rest, and Sunday night was taken to the hospital.
Mr. Covert was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, Sept. 6, 1847, and had been a resident of Riverside for 40 years. He was one of the original stockholders in the Riverside Title company and at the time of his death was president of the company. He was active in the work of the First Methodist church and held the office of president of the board of trustees. For many years he had been a member of the board.
Shortly after coming to Riverside, Mr. Covert planted a 20-acre orange grove in West Riverside, which he later sold. In 1901 he built the Covert Block, located on Eighth street between Main and Orange streets. During his later years he had lived a retired life, his business activities being confined to care of the Covert Block and a two-acre orange grove at his home, 1920 Eighth street.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sarah E. Covert, a daughter, Mrs. Emerson L. Holt, of 3504 Larchwood Place; and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Jamison, of Redondo Beach. His first wife, mother of Mrs. Holt, died in 1922.
Funeral services for Mr. Covert will be conducted Friday morning at 10 o'clock from the chapel of M. H. Simons and company, Dr. J. Lewis Gillies, pastor of First Methodist church, of Monrovia, officiating. Interment will be made in the mausoleum at Evergreen cemetery.
