C. H. Matson, 71, Of Los Angeles Dies

Clarence H. Matson, 71, prominent for 35 years in the development of Los Angeles harbor, died recently at his home in Pacific Palisades, Calif. He was consulting foreign trade manager of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce at the time of his death, having retired from active service about 18 months before.

He was born at Kirtland, O., April 6, 1872, started his career as a newspaperman, and married May Collins of Salina, Kans., in 1898. He was a member of the Pacific Geographic Society, Delta Phi Epsilon, the China Society of Southern California, and of the advisory boards of the Foreign Trade club of Southern California and of Yenching University, Chicago.

During the past year, Mr. Matson contributed several articles on shipping to the Los Angeles Times Reader Editorial page and to other publications. He is survived by his wife, two sons, the Rev. William Archie Matson of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Theodore C. Matson of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters, sister, and a brother Elmer of Smith Center, Kan.
