Three-Term Sheriff Is Dead At 66

Body Found In Paw Paw Home

PAW PAW — Funeral services were scheduled this afternoon for former Van Buren County Sheriff Howard E. Englesby, 66, who was found dead at his home, 707 Pine street, Saturday night. A medical examiner said Englesby died of natural causes sometime Friday evening.

Englesby was born Jan. 15, 1902 in Watertown, S. D., and came to South Haven in 1921. In 1926 he married the former Elda Holmes of South Haven who preceded him in death last May.

Englesby was appointed a special deputy for the South Haven area in 1934 by Sherriff Warren Dodge, and in 1936 was summoned to Paw Paw to serve as chief deputy. He later served as undersheriff and in 1942 was elected to the first of three terms as sheriff. For the past 20 years he had worked for the Michigan Sheriff's Association.

Englesby was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Paw Paw, the Paw Paw Masonic Lodge and the Dewitt Clinton consistory of the Shrine, Grand Rapids.

Survivors include a son, Howard E., Jr., in the U.S. Army in Massachusetts; a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Cooper of Otsego; four grandchildren; a brother, Frank, of Portland, Ore.; and two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Spelman and Mrs. Helen Ditch, both of South Haven.

Funeral services were to be at 2 p.m. today at the Hawley Funeral home, Paw Paw, with the Rev. John M. Coppic, pastor of the Paw Paw First Presbyterian church, officiating. Masonic graveside services will be conducted at Prospect Hill Cemetery by the Paw Paw Masonic lodge.
