Marian Graff

Sioux Falls — Marian Graff of Sioux Falls, surrounded by her children and grandchildren, passed away peacefully September 20, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Colton, South Dakota, June 8, 1919 to Clarence and Ruth (Colton) Peterson. At age 13, her family moved to Sioux Falls and then Brandon, SD. She graduated from Brandon High school in 1937. Marian was one of six children. She had two brothers, Clarion and Merton, and three sisters, Lucille, Phyllis, and Paulina.

Marian and Bernie Howard Graff were united in marriage at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls in 1937. They resided in Sioux Falls and raised three children, Gerry, Gayle and Neil.

Marian was a homemaker for the first 18 years of her married life and, to put her children through college, worked at Terrace Park Dairy for 27 years. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren and deeply involved in their lives. She and her husband, Bernie, followed their son, Neil, throughout his football career at Lincoln High School, University of Wisconsin, as well as his NFL professional career. Grandson, Chris, joined Bernie and Marian every summer and granddaughter, Stephanie, lived with Marian her senior year of high school. More recently, Marian devoted her life to grandson, Ben, who is a special needs child. The two of them had a special "bond" that transcended the word "love" and gave the word "devotion" a new meaning. Marian was a loving, generous, hardworking woman who touched the lives of many and asked for little in return.

She is survived by her children, Gerry (Carole) Graff, Gayle (Tom) Hamilton, and Neil (Debra) Graff; seven grandchildren, Sheila and Thomas Hamilton, Stephanie (Joe) Polverari, Christopher Graff, and Bergen, Benjamin, and Elizabeth Graff; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Alexandra Polverari; and her sisters Paulina Richardson, Phyllis Schock and Pat Peterson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernie Graff; a sister, Lucille Mannes; and two brothers Clarion and Merton Peterson.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 23, at Heritage Funeral Home, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Her funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 24, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Memorials may be made in Marian's name to Children's Care Hospice and School or the Special Olympics.
