Ruth Peterson

Ruth F. Peterson, 92, of 1000 N. Lake Ave., died Saturday at Dow-Rummel Village.

Ruth Ellen Colton was born Sept. 19, 1899, the daughter of Pauline Miller Colton and John E. Colton, for whom the town of Colton, S.D., was named.

She was graduated from Dakota Wesleyan College in 1911 and married Clarence H. Peterson on Aug. 14, 1914. She taught at the Colton Public School and later was superintendent of the Chester Public School.

Until his death in 1936, her husband owned the Colton Savings Bank. After he died, she operated a grocery store and was postmistress in Brandon, S.D. She retired in 1955. Survivors include a son, Clarion, Sioux Falls; four daughters, Mrs. Henry (Lucille) Mannes, Mrs. Bernie (Marian) Graff, Mrs. Al (Phyllis) Schock, all of Sioux Falls, and Mrs. Rolland (Polly) Richardson of Garden Grove, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Louis (Esther) Todnem, Colton; 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be at the Colton Cemetery in Colton. George Boom Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
