Indianapolis Journal, April 20, 18977592
LAFAYETTE, April 19.—John M. Holloway, a farmer, an account of whose shooting by Isaac Downs, a neighbor, appeared in the Journal last Wednesday, died this morning. He suffered intensely, and death was a relief. The particulars of the killing are somewhat conflicting. Down's story is that Holloway and his son were armed; that the father threw a big club at him, at the same time calling to his son, Joseph Holloway, to shoot. He says he dodged the club, and as young Holloway raised his gun, he (Downs) fired at John Holloway who was very near to him. THe charge entered Holloway's chest and abdomen, a few shots lodging in his arm. The Holloway side of the story is that, in the morning, Downs was ordered off the land of Holloway, but that, instead of going, he raised a rifle and took aim at Holloway, but that the weapon did not explode. Downs then went after another gun. Young Holloway borrowed a gun, which his father made him lay down, expressing the belief that Downs would not shoot. After Downs had fired on his father, Joseph Holloway aimed at Downs. The latter then started to run, when Holloway fired again, the shot hitting Downs in the back, doing no injury.
Both men are well-to-do, respected citizens, and have families. Holloway was about forty-eight years old; Downs is almost sixty-seven. The latter has been in jail since the shooting, and has remained unconcerned about the affair until to-day, when he was informed of Holloway's death. He then began to realize the position he was in. He expressed regrets for Holloway's family that it had occurred, but maintained that his action was one of self-defense; that while he might be convicted by an earthly court, he felt certain of acquittal in the court on high.
