A former Redlands resident, Mrs. Walter James Hornby, now of Los Angeles, celebrated her 100th birthday Sunday surrounded by her relatives and friends.
Still remarkably active and alert in spite of her century-long lifetime Mrs. Hornby is said to spend much of each day writing poetry. She is also an amateur artist and her landscapes and seascapes hang on the walls of the house where she now lives.
Mrs. Hornby was born Alice Gibson in Linesville, Pennsylvania. At the age of five she went with her family to Iowa and came to California in 1889 as the bride of Mr. Hornby, a teacher. He died in 1929.
With the centenarian on her birthday were her daughter and son, Mrs. William Followell and Ralph Hornby, eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Walter J. Hornby, 70, pioneer educator and banker of Southern California, and principal of the Lincoln school in Pasadena more than 25 years ago, died last night at the family residence in Burbank, where he had lived for 39 years. In early days here Mr. Hornby was well known for his advanced educational ideas. After leaving his position here he became head of the school system in Burbank.
As one of the organizers of the Merchants' and Farmers' bank, which is now merged with the Bank of Italy, Mr. Hornby served as a director for a number of years. He took a leading part in the movement which resulted in the extension of the Pacific Electric railroad from Glendale to Burbank.
Mr. Hornby was a native of Denmark, Ia. Surviving him are the widow, Mrs. Alice Gibson Hornby; two sons, Ralph W. Hornby of Los Angeles, and Lloyd G. Hornby of Kalespel, Mont.; two daughters, Mrs. Eleanor F. WOodford, Los Angeles; Mrs. Katherine Follawell, Tuna Canyon, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Turner, Santa Cruz.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Powell mortuary chapel, 333 North Magnolia, Burbank. Rev. Roy L. Youtz will conduct the services and cremation will follow. Some of Mr. Hornby's favorite hymns will be played during the services by Mrs. Grace Lovejoy, violinist.

News has reached here of the death of Walter Hornby who died at his home in California Jan. 28. He had been sick for some time. He was born here and had many friends and relatives here. His wife was Miss Alice Gibson of Des Moines county, who survives, also two sons and two daughters.

Mrs. Alice G. Hornby, at one-time rated among the 10 foremost women painters of the west, died Sunday night. She had celebrated her 100th birthday in August.
Noted for her life-like reproductions of wild flowers, Mrs. Hornby's works were exhibited at major art galleries in Los Angeles. She retired from active participation in the art world 10 years ago.
A native of Linesville, Pa., Mrs. Hornby lived in Big Bear City for six years with her daughter Mrs. Catherine Followell. She lived in California 70 years.
Death came to the centenarian at her daughter's home. She had lived in San Bernadino rest homes for the past two years.
She was a Daughter of the Colonies, a member of the DAR in Los Angeles, and the First Baptist Church of that city. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Followell, Big Bear; son, Ralph W. Hornby, Los Angeles; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Richey, Palo Alto.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mark B. Shaw Chapel. Cremation will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Beaumont.
