Carthage Woman's Sister, Nurse In Service, Killed

New Castle, Ind., March 10 — Second Lt. Elizabeth J. Howren, flight nurse, was killed in an airplane crash over Sicily on Feb. 24, while helping to evacuate the wounded from the battlefields of Italy, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howren, 1700 A avenue, were notified in a telegram received Wednesday evening from the war department. Lt. Howren was Henry county's first woman casualty in World War II.

The telegram stated that a letter would follow.

Lt. Howren had been overseas since January 1, having landed in North Africa. She was 26 years of age and would have been in the service a year ago tomorrow. Her parents had just received a letter from her dated Feb. 16.

Born in New Castle on Aug. 23, 1917, she graduated from the New Castle high school in 1933 and took her nurse's training at the Methodist hospital, Indianapolis. After graduating from nurse's training, she was surgery nurse at the Henry County hopsital. Just before entering service with the army air forces nurses, she was employed as first aid nurse at the Chrysler plant here. She entered the service as a second liutenant on March 10, 1943, taking her training at Jefferson Barracks, Mo.

Surviving besides the parents are two sisters, Mrs. Claude Souder of Carthage and Jean Ann Howren at home; three brothers, James and John at home, and Second Lt. Thomas Howren who is in Australia.

MEMORIAL SERVICES FOR LIEUT. ELIZABETH HOWREN

A large number of people were in attendance at memorial services held Sunday afternoon in the First Methodist church at New Castle in honor of Lieut. Elizabeth Howren, army nurse, who sacrificed her life in an effort to save the lives of others when the plane in which she was riding crahsed into a mountain side in Sicily during a dense fog. Monday afternoon similar services were held at Methodist hospital, Indianapolis.

Lieut. Howren was a sister to Mrs. Claude Souder of this place.

Among those attending the services in New Castle from here were Mr. and Mrs. Souder, Mrs. Louie Souder, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pearson, Miss Arletta Small, Dale Earnest and Mrs. Walter Nelson.

Mrs. Souder, with her mother, Mrs. Fred Howren, and daughter of New Castle attended the hospital services Monday.
