Married Sunday

Mrs. Janice Souder of Carthage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Howren of New Castle, and Worth Pitts, son of William Pitts of near here, were quietly married at 12:30 p. m. Sunday, at the home of Rev. Basil Stultz, near Arlington, who performed the ceremony. The attendants were the bride's parents and her sister, Miss Jean Ann Howren of Chicago, and Mr. and Mrs. James Geise, near here. The couple is residing at the Pitts home southwest of here.

Rites Held For Claude Souder

Claude C. Souder, age 45, a highly respected farmer, living southeast of Carthage, died Tuesday morning at 11:30 o'clock after a serious illness of several months.

Mr. Souder was a son of Oren and Louetta Souder, and was born November 9, 1905.

He was married to Miss Janice Howren of New Castle, July 15, 1935, and was a member of the East Street Christian Church.

Beside the widow, survivors include one brother, Paul, near Carthage, and two sisters: Mrs. Pearl Fancher, and Mrs. Helen Dyer, near Arlington.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Wyatt Memorial with the Rev. Basil Stultz officiating. Burial followed in Glen Cove Cemetery, Knightstown.

Carthage Nurse Dies Following Long Illness

Mrs. Janice Louise Pitts, 49, died at her home on R. R. 1, Carthage, at 2:10 p.m. Saturday after five years of failing health. Her condition had been serious for six months.

She was born in New Castle on September 30, 1914, the daughter of Fred and Pauline Clements Howren, and first was married to Claude Souder. Following his death in 1951, she was married on June 8, 1952, to Worth Pitts, who survives.

A resident of the Carthage community since 1935, Mrs. Pitts worked as a practical nurse there. She was employed at the Container Corporation plant during World War II.

Mrs. Pitts was a member of the East Street Christian Church in Carthage and was a past president of the Christian Women's Fellowship of that church. She also was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Carthage.

Surviving with the husband are two children, Thomas Pitts and Anna Marie Pitts, at home; her step-mother, Mrs. Fred Howren of New Castle; a brother, Thomas Howren of Anchorage, Alaska; two half-brothers, James Howren of Elwood and John Howren of Lafayette, a., and a half-sister, Mrs. William Veach of Terre Haute.

A sister was killed during World War II while serving as an Army evacuation nurse.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Carthage East Street Christian Church, with the Rev. Robert Kendall officiating, and burial will follow in Walnut Ridge Cemetery near there. Friends may call at the Hampton Mortuary in Carthage at any time.

Mrs. Janice Pitts Dies at 49

Carthage — Mrs. Janice Louise Pitts, 49, died at her home Saturday after a long illness.

Born in New Castle, she has lived in Carthage since 1935. Mrs. Pitts was a practical nurse, and during World War II was employed at the Container Corporation.

ROBERT WORTH PITTS

Robert Worth Pitts, 83, R. 1, Carthage, died Tuesday morning in Hancock Co. Hospital.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the John J. Todd funeral home in Carthage, with Rev. David Greenfield presiding.

Burial will be at Walnut Ridge Cemetery and visitation will be Thursday after 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born Oct. 19, 1901 to William Francis and Jenny May (Henby) Pitts. He was married June of 1950 to Janice Howren, who preceded him in death.

He was a member of the Carter Memorial American Legion (Carthage), was in W.W. II, and was a birthright Quaker. He was also on the township advisory board for many years.

Survivors include: son, Thomas Worth Pitts, R. 1, Carthage; daughter, Mrs. Michael (AnnaMarie) Gibson, R. 1, Carthage; brother, Gerald S. Pitts, San Diego, Cal.; and three grandchildren.

His brother and sister preceded him in death.
