Mrs. R. J. Engle, who moved from here to California about four years ago, where she married her second husband, is a widow again and has written to neighbors here for an affidavit that her first husband is dead, she being an applicant for a widow's pension. It will be remembered that J. R. Engle was struck by lightning and killed in July, 1892, while standing in his door yard on the farm south of J. B. Jackson's.
Farmers Advocate, August 5, 18929488
The following account of the killing of Mr. J. R. Engle, by lightning, during the storm on Thursday afternoon of last week, we clip from the Neosho Falls post of Friday last:
On Thursday about 1 o'clock, p. m., J. R. Engle, who lived on a farm four miles southwest of this place, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. At the time, he was standing in his dooryard watching an approaching rain cloud, and doubtless praying that its watery treasure would be poured out upon his parched fields and growing crops. The deceased was 66 years old and respected by all who knew him. He was a hard working man, but like the majority of men, had never succeeded in accumulating much of this world's goods. He leaves a wife and seven children, four of whom are at home; the others are living in the west. The bereaved family have the sympathy of all friends in their great sorrow.
We understand that Mr. Engle's family are left in very straightened circumstances, his farm having been foreclosed under mortgage a short while ago, and but little is left for them to work with.
