James H. Irvine of Springfield, Mo., died June14th at the home of his son-in-law, Rev. E. B. Chenoweth, in Bartlett, Texas, where he and his wife had been visiting since March 1st. The remains were brought to Springfield for burial and were followed to their last resting place by his old comrades, the Confederate Veterans of Campbell Camp, six stalwart sons of veterans acting as pallbearers. There were also with the concourse of sympathising friends, a daughter, Mrs. C. W. Fisher of Pueblo, Colo.; a son, E. H. Irvine of Warrensburg, Mo., and two brothers, E. P. Irvine of Memphis, Tenn., and A. M. Irvine and wife of Ft. Scott, Kansas.
The deceased was born and raised near Fairville, Saline county, his father being the late P. Y. Irvine, who was a pioneer settler of that vicinity.
At an early age he united with the Mt. Carmel M. E. church, south, and the sweet Christ spirit has been manifest throughout his life.
He was married May 7, 1857, to Miss Emma Hudson of Fairville, and his death closed an ideal wedlock of fifty-three years.
In 1889 Mr. Irvine moved with his family to Kansas, living near Syracuse in that state till 1906, when he moved to Springfield, Mo., and the high esteem in which he was held there was attested by the beautiful floral tributes which completely covered his grave.
One of the most charming traits of this old-school gentleman was his chivalrous devotion to his wife. No one who saw them together could fail to be impressed by his courtesy toward her. Gracious to one and all he yet reserved for her the delicate attentions which make life worth the while and which shoed the fine grain of his nature.
He is survived by his widow and thirteen children as follows: Mrs. Lillian Hatcher, Miss Mattie Bell Irvine, Mrs. C. M. Wilson, Springfield, Mo.; E. H. Irvine, Warrensburg, Mo.; Mrs. C. B. Chenoweth, Bartlett, Texas; Mrs. R. H. Dunnington, Fairmount, W. Va.; Mrs. G. W. Irvine, Syracuse, Kas.; H. Y. Irvine, Syracuse, Kas.; Mrs. S. C. Webster, Colorado City, Colo.; Mrs. L. J. McDonald, Roswell, Colo.; Mrs. C. W. Fisher, Pueblo, Colo.; John R. Irvine, Pueblo, Colo.; James E. Irvine, Deming, N. M. There are also two sisters and five brothers surviving: Mrs. Wm. Rock, Catulla, Texas; Mrs. S. H. Flournoy, Kansas City; Mr. M. B. Irvine, Minneapolis, Minn.; A. T. Irvine, Hughesville, Mo.; E. B. Irvine, Memphis, Tenn.; Hugh Irvine, Nevada, Mo.; and A. M.
