Mrs. Helen Irvine Died Early Today

Funeral Arrangements Have Not Been Made Awaiting the Arrival of a Son

Mrs. Helen Irvine, 96 years old, died about 2 a. m. today at her home, 222 North Jefferson.

Funeral arrangements have not been made awaiting arrival of her son, George Irvine, from Danville, Ky.

Helen Brown Irvine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Brown, was born September 7, 1843 in Miami, and many years of her life were spent in the then thriving river town, and she never grew tired of telling of her recollections and experiences of her childhood and young womanhood. Her mind remained clear until her passing. She was married November 22, 1866 to William A. Irvine in the Mount Carmel church.

Mrs. Irvine attended a School for Girls in Miami, organized by a Professor Lindsey about 1850. She studied art and made two pencil drawings that are exceptionally good. She also fashioned a needlepoint picture of Moses in the bullrushes, done in bright colors, which shows marked artistic ability. Through the years she did fine needle work of many types, and during her declining year she pieced quilts for her family and friends.

She made trips when a girl by covered wagon to Texas; and to California, by boat to St. Louis, by train to New York City, by boat to Aspin Wall, by train across the Isthmus of Panama, by Ocean steamer to San Francisco. Encounters with the Indians in pioneer days and Civil War experiences Mrs. Irvine often related. Her stories were authentic and interesting. She represented a type that is fast passing—those who actually knew the pioneer life of the middle West, witnessing progress and development.

Three children were born to Mrs. Irvine, Ollie Irvine, who lives in the home; Miss Nannie Irvine who died October 26, and who had given unselfish devotion to her mother and brother; George Irvine of Danville, Ky., who is now enroute to Marshall.

Mrs. Irvine had been a member of the Methodist church for many years.
