MISSING FOR YEAR, DIED IN FRANCE

OFFICIAL TELEGRAM RECEIVED FROM WAR DEPARTMENT

Private Melvin E. Stambaugh of Iowa, Whose Father Resides Near Middlesex, Died Overseas, Cause Undetermined

Among the names of the men "killed by accident and died of disease" that appeared on the official casualty list received at this office this morning appeared that of melvin e. Stambaugh, Carlisle R. D. 4, whose nearest relative was given as Emanuel A. Stambaugh.

Further information received from the family of the young man disclosed the fact that not since July of last year had any letter been received from him. For twelve long months the father and the brothers and sisters waited anxiously for some work, but not a line came. Was he wounded, or killed, or a prisoner, or was it only indifference? Those and a hundred other possibilities filled their minds.

It was more than a year ago that the first call of the draft summoned young Stambaugh from the farm in Iowa where he was living with his brother, and sent him to Camp Dodge for training for foreign service. In due season he did go to France, not in a regular unit, but with a detachment of replacement troops. Whether he was assigned to infantry, artillery, engineers, or in fact, to what branch of the service he went, his relatives do not know. Nor do they know if in any capacity he ever reached the front line or saw actual fighting.

The father, Emanuel E. Stambaugh, who now resides on R. D. 7, near Middlesex, received the official telegram from the Adjutant-General on Wednesday announcing the death of his son, but this message simply stated the young man was dead and that the date and cause of death were undetermined. This increased the uncertainty, an uncertainty that as the months pass by may become more mysterious rather than become clarified.

Private Stambaugh was twenty-four years of age and was a sober and industrious young farmer. Besides his father he is survived by a number of brothers and sisters as follows: Mrs. Shirk, Lawrence, Iowa; Elmer, Perry County; Niles, Mechanicsburg; Mrs. Gouffer, Penbreak; Norma, Earl, Eldon, Elizabeth and Verda, at home.
