Two young lives were made mutually happy Wednesday, April 12, by the marriage of Miss Jessie Caroline Ballou and Charles Oscar Swanson of Colon, Neb. The event which linked together the hopes and desires of these two young hearts took place at the home of the bride's parents, Martin Ballou and wife, one-half mile north of town. It was a very pretty house wedding, to which almost two dozen of the intimate friends of the family were invited, a beautiful day, with a sky full of sunshine seemed to give its benediction and betoken a future of joy and success for the two who pledged their best affections and vows.
At high noon with soft strains of music the bride and groom appeared, accompanied by the Rev. J. William Carson, who read the ceremony, listened to the necessary marriage promises and pronounced the words by which a new door of joy and a new pathway of responsibility opened for each. The bride was attractively attired in a gown of brown silk and held a nosegay of bridal roses, whilst the dark suit of the groom showed the good taste and propriety which are becoming to many occasions. Immediately after the nuptials the dining room doors retreated and a five course wedding lunch was served with the assistance of Misses Edna Moon, Elizabeth Ballou and Maude Brush. The bride, who has always claimed Ashland as her home is known to a large company of our readers as a young lady of the highest character, a member of the First Congregational church and enjoys the confidence and love of a large number of friends, who sincerely wish that "her joys may be as deep as the ocean and her sorrows as light as its foam." The groom is a careful, prosperous young man of good reputation and pleasing address who follows the most independent and healthy of all professions, farming. The presents given at the wedding were an index to the sentiments cherished for them by their friends, whose best thoughts will often proceed towards and center in their new home and their good fortune. In the afternoon, midst the trials and joys of repeated showers of rice, the newly joined couple left for the home of the groom near Colon, where a reception awaited them in the evening.
