HYMENEAL

BALLOU—TARPENNING

A pretty wedding was witnessed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Tarpenning on the north side, on Dec. 3 at high noon, when Mr. James B. Ballou and Miss Daisy D. Tarpenning were united in the bonds of matrimony. Mr. Albert Tarpenning and Miss Kittie Will were "best man" and bridesmaid.

Miss Nettie Workman was at the organ and played a pretty wedding march which was struck up at high noon. Elder L. As. Hussong officiated in an impressive and pleasing manner.

A dinner of most select viands was served immediately after the nuptial scene. The near relatives and a good company of very choice friends were present.

The rooms were cosy, the curtains being drawn, and very prettily decorated and lighted.

Their vows were witnessed and sealed beneath a huge bell hung amidst a profusion of pretty festoonings.

The bride was attired in pure white while the groom wore the conventional black.

These excellent young people are to make their home 2 1/2 miles north on "Jim's" farm, where they will dwell in peace and prosperity surrounded by a host of friends now, and more and more as they grow older.

James B. Ballou, 76, Is Killed In Auto Accident Tuesday

James B. Ballou, 76, better known as “Jim” to many friends in the Ashland community, died in a one-car auto accident about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4. The accident occurred when he apparently lost control of the car on an icy spot of State Highway 76 five miles southeast of Albion, between there and St. Edward. He was en route to Albion to look after farm interests in that vicinity, and the news of his tragic death was a shock to many friends and relatives. There was a short strip of icy highway between Albion and St. Edwards Tuesday morning and several motorists had struck it without warning. The Ballou car went off the left side of the highway and evidently skidded sideways into a highline pole, striking the right side of the vehicle. A farmer living nearby rushed to the scene of the wreck and he thought Mr. Ballou died within a few minutes. Mr. Ballou was a native of Ashland having been born here Feb. 15, 1878 and continued to reside in the community all his life. He was successfully engaged in farming for many years. After moving to Ashland he maintained an active interest in his farm operations.

Surviving are his wife, Daisy; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Fenton and Mrs. Sue Cummer, both of Pomona, California; one brother, Otis Ballou, Ashland; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mildred Ballou, Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. A son, Martin Ballou, died January 27, 1949. The body was brought to the Marcy Chapel, and funeral arrangements were pending at the time The Gazette went to press Wednesday afternoon.
