ELIJAH BARLEY DROPPED DEAD

Well Known Marion Man While Driving Clover Hulling Outfit on Gas City Streets, Died of Heart Failure, Monday

Seated upon a water wagon in a clover hulling outfit, Elijah W. Barley, a well-known resident of Marion, dropped dead at Gas City shortly before noon Monday. Mr. Barley was associated with David Pilce of Gas City in the threshing and clover hulling business, and his death occurred just as the wagon was passing the Plice home at South B and Sixth streets. The remains were carried to the Pilce residence and later removed to the Barley home, 416 North Adams street, Marion.

The deceased was born Nov. 1, 1855, and was in his fifty-third year. He had lived in Grant county all his life and was well known. For many years Mr. Barley was employed as an engineer in the Barley & Spencer planing mill on South McClure street. He was a stationary engineer by trade, and for some time he has been operating a threshing machine. Within the last few weeks he took charge of a clover hulling outfit and was preparing to hull clover near Gas City at the time of his death.

Mr. Barley had driven to the city with a water tank which had been filled from one of the hydrants. On the return trip he was joined by Mr. Plice and the men rode on the wagon until the bank was reached. Here Mr. Plice alighted and went to the bank to cash a check. Mr. Barley continued his drive and when the Plice home was reached he became ill suddenly and fell from the wagon. Bystanders rushed to his side, but life departed in a few minutes.

The deceased leaves a wife, one son, Carl, and three daughters, Miss Amanda Barley, Mrs. Charles Sterling, and Mrs. Lela Pengelly of San Francisco. He has five sisters—Mrs. Charles Derkes, Mrs. Charles Oddum, Mrs. Laura Stevens of Marion and Mrs. Stella Clark ad Mrs. Delle Ellison of Ft. Wayne. A father—Jacob Barley— also survives. No arrangements for the funeral have been made. Mr. Barley had been in failing health for more than a year and heart trouble is said to have caused death.
