EVANSVILLE—Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bernstein, 304 Garfield, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in United Methodist Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Briggs, rural Brooklyn, also will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary with the Bernsteins. Briggs and Iva Laughridge were married April 16, 1939.

The couples request that gifts be omitted.

Bernstein and Ruby Laughridge were married April 9, 1939.

The couple has two children: Larry, Stoughton, and Darryl, Evansville; and five grandchildren.

Bernstein, Herbert James

EVANSVILLE - Herbert James Bernstein, age 81, of Evansville, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001 at Evansville Manor Nursing Home. He was born March 25, 1910, in Sylvester, Wis., the son of Henry Edward and Elizabeth (Vollhardt) Bernstein. He married Ruby L. Laughridge on April 9, 1939, at the Methodist Parsonage in Albany, Wis. Together they farmed for many years. Herbert also worked for Varco-Prudon as a machinist and supervisor inspector. He enjoyed many hobbies including playing pool, fishing, dancing, bowling, reading, hunting, taking trips and card playing. He was a member of Evansville United Methodist Church. Herbert is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruby of Evansville; two sons, Larry (Ann) of Stoughton, and Darryl (Mary) of Evansville.

EVANSVILLE—Ruby Lily Bernstein, 89, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Stoughton Hospital. She was born on Jan. 29, 1920, in Albany Township, Albany, WI, the daughter of Hugh Eugene and Alma L. (Sylvester) Laughridge. She attended and graduated from Albany High Shool and married Herbert James Bernstein on April 9, 2929, at the parsonage in Albany. They moved to Evansville in 1943 and farmed for many years. She later worked at the Ben Franklin store in Evansville. She enjoyed music, sewing, researching the family genealogy, crafts and dancing. She watched over the neighborhood and the neighbors, loved her family, and was a loving mother and grandmother. She belonged to the White Star Club, White Star Homemakers, and was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women's group.

She is survived by two sons, Larry (Ann) Bernstein of Stoughton and Darryl (Mary) Bernstein of Evansville; five grandchildren: Denis (Steven) Sime, Angie (Sean) Brusegar, April (fiancee, Curt Brekken) Bernstein, Randy (Lisa) Bernstein, and Mike Bernstein; six great-grandchildren: Jessica Sime, Cole Brusegar, Brady Brusegar, BreeAnn Olson, Ashley (Cody) Bennington, and Thomas Bernstein; and a brother, Ray (Carol) Laughridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert on Oct. 11, 2001; her parents; five sisters; and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2009, at the United Methodist Church in Evansville, with Reverend Sue Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Evansville. Friends may call on Friday, July 10, from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Ward Funeral Home, Evansville, WI.
