Joseph Barnfield Torbet Hughes died at his home in Springfield Friday evening after an extended illness. He was born in Lindon, Pa., March 20, 1860, moving to Bennington, Kansas, at the age of 25 years. In 1888 he was married to Miss Laura Blair, Witchea [sic] county, Kansas, and the following year they came to Oregon, settling near Salem, where they lived for 10 years. At that time they tookup a homestead in Brownsville, where they both stayed until the Booth-Kelly mill started at Wendling, when Mr. Hughes took up work with the mill. In 1907 they moved to Brownsville, where they lived most of the [time] since.
Survivors include the widow; [three] sons, Robert, of Eugene, Edward Ross of Stayton, Ore., and Charles of Jersey Shore, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Clara M. Springer and Mrs. Beula B. Carey of Brownsville; [?] grandchildren; two brothers, Edw[ard] Hughes of Minneapolis, Kansas, [?] George Hughes, of Lindon, Pa.; [?] sisters, Mrs. Tillie Newton of Brownsville, and Miss Euphema Hughes, Mrs. Belle Stewart, and Frances [?] of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Hughes was a member of [the] Missionary Alliance. Funeral serv[ices] will be held Monday morning at [?] o'clock from the Presbyterian ch[urch] of Brownsville, with interment in [the] Masonic cemetery. The Phil Bart[holo]mew chapel of Springfield is [in] charge. Mr. Bartholomew le[?] Springfield at 7:30 o'clock Mon[day] Morning.

Mrs. Laura Hughes Norwood, 69, wife of John Norwood of Brownsville, died at the family home at 11:30 p.m. Friday, January 23, from a heart attack. She was born March 18, 1872 in Salina, Kansas, and had been a resident of Oregon for 53 years, for the last 35 years in Brownsville and vicinity. She was married in Kansas in 1880 to Joseph Hughes, who died in 1936. In 1940 she was married to John Norwood, who survives her.
She is also survived by the following children: Robert Hughes, of Eugene; Ross Hughes, of Stayton; Newton Hughes of Philadelphia, Pa.; Clara Sprenger of Crawfordsville and Beulah Carey of Brownsville; 26 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Anna E. Buell of Salem, and a brother, O. N. Blair of Portland. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Funeral services will be held from the Brownsville Free Methodist church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 25, in charge of the Fisher funeral home of Brownsville. Rev. L. C. Gould is to officiate. Interment will be in the Union cemetery at Crawfordsville.

NORWOOD—John Logan Norwood, age 73, died at a Eugene hospital Tuesday, September 10, 1946. He lived at the Smeed Hotel in Eugene. He was born August 16, 1873, in Jackson County, Arkansas. Survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joe Kropf, of Harrisburg; three children preceded him in death in infancy. Graduated from high school in Harrisburg, graduate of Willamette University Law School in 1902 and was admitted to the bar the same year. He was baptized in the Christian Church in 1919. Married Miss Avis Tanton in 1907; Mrs. Norwood passed away in 1911. He married Mrs. Laura B. Hughes of Brownsville, in 1940; she passed away in 1942. Mr. Norwood has been in the real estate business in Eugene for the last 10 years. Funeral services will be held at the Mennonite Church in Harrisburg, Friday, September 13, at 1 p.m. Miller-Sherman Funeral Home of Harrisburg in charge. Interment in the Masonic Cemetery in Harrisburg.
