VETERAN ROADMASTER DEAD

Charles F. Shepard Was Long in Employ of Burlington.

Charles F. Shepard, who died at Ashland last week, at the age of sixty-two years, was long an employe of the Burlington and was well known in this city. Soon after the war, in which he served in an Ohio regiment, he settled on a farm in Saunders county. When the construction of the Burlington through Saunders county began in 1870 he worked with a construction party and soon after was made a section foreman at Waverly. Five years later he took charge of a construction train operating between Omaha and Plattsmouth, and Lincoln and continued to be thus employed till the spring of 1885, when a further promotion made him roadmaster of the Grand Island Alliance division, with his home at Ravenna. He held this position for 14 year. July 4, 1890, he was transferred to the Lincoln, Schuyler and Columbus division, with his headquarters at Ashland, and he held this position till failing health compelled him to give up active employment. In July, 1903 he received a slight stroke of paralysis, followed by another in May of the following year. With indomitable energy and ambition he continued to fill his position till the following November, when he was obliged to resign, and since that time his life has been that of an invalid. About two months before his death he was taken with another and more severe stroke which rendered him entirely helpess and caused his last days to be days of extreme suffering.

He died Monday, September 28, and was buried October 1 at Ashland.

Mr. Shepard was the father of Martin E Shepard, a Burlington conductor of this city, Charles Ernest Shepard, trainmaster for the Northern Pacific at Livinston, Mont., Pardon B Chepard of this city; Mrs. D. F. Clark, and Mrs. V. A. Clarfl.

C. E. Shepard, who was here to attend the funeral, left Lincoln last night for his home in Montana.

Mrs. Susan Shepard

Susan Hester Ballou was born at Providence, New York, August 27, 1846. Died May 18, 1911, aged 64 years 9 months 21 days.

Miss Susan Ballou was married to Charles F Shepard of Ashtabula, Ohio November 22, 1866. Mr. Shepard preceded her September 2, 1908.

Mrs. Shepard was the daughter of Emor S. Ballou. After her marriage in Ohio they moved to Nebraska in 1867 and settled on a homestead in Green precinct, Saunders county, when later they moved to Waverly, Nebraska, where he received employment with the Burlington Railroad Company. Some years later he was promoted to the position as roadmaster, which caused them to move to Ravenna, Nebraska. After having lived there nearly five years Mr. Shepard was transferred to Ashland in charge of Lincoln, Schuyler, and Columbus Divisions with headquarters at Ashland. This position he held until failing health required him to give up active employment. They lived in Ashland their remaining days.

Mrs. Shepard was never very strong but in later years enjoyed better health until the death of her husband from whom she grieved and the sickness and death of her son, Ernest. He was in ill health nearly three years and died just five weeks previous to her death. Since then she has been in failing health until her death. Her death was caused from stomach and bowel trouble. Five children were born unto Mr. and Mrs. Shepard, namely, Martin E. Shepard, Charles E. Shepard, Susan H., wife of D. F. Clark, Pardon B., Etta M., wife of V. O. Clark. All survive her except Charles E., and were with her when she died. They had nine grandchildren, one dying in infancy. Besides her own family she leaves to mourn her loss two sisters and one brother, Mrs. L. B. Stanley of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. J.S. Green of Red Wing, Minnesota, Mr. M. E. Ballou, Ashland, Nebraska.

Mrs. Shepard was taken, very suddenly, seriously ill at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller and was unable to be moved and died at their home. The funeral was held at the home of her son Pardon in this city, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. J. W. Hilton of Cotner University, a former pastor of the Ashland Christian church. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse, the casket being covered with cut flowers and arranged around it were numerous set pieces of hot house flowers. The interment was in the Ashland cemetery.
