Dorothy S. Brown

1916 - 2003

AGAWAM - Dorothy (Sherwin) Brown, 86, of Agawam, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 17, 2003 at home. Born in Raleigh, NC, the third of seven children, she was the daughter of the late Professor Melvin Ernest and Edith (Dodson) Sherwin. In 1937 she earned her degree in chemistry at Women's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC. She taught high school biology for five years in Gastonia, NC and then went back to the University of North Carolina as a dormitory counselor and assistant in the chemistry department. During World War II Dorothy served five years as a bacteriologist for the city of Greensboro, NC. In 1954 she moved to Agawam where she was a substitute teacher for a number of years followed by work in Special Chemistry at the former Wesson Memorial Hospital and Baystate Medical Center. Considered by her peers to be an innovative flower arranger, Dorothy spent many hours gardening, thus assuring plenty of material with which to work. She was an advocate of natural habitat gardening. A longtime member of the Agawam Garden Club with efforts in conservation and in staging flower shows. She was also a member of the Springfield Garden Club and "The Garden Group". Dorothy was a longtime member of the Agawam Congregational Church and was active in their Fellowship Guild with emphasis on flower arrangements and garden gate activities. She was a member of the local Great Books Group, a volunteer at the Agawam Public Library, a member of the Center Library Association and the book group "Page Turners". She also enjoyed many hours as an avid bridge player. Her husband of fifty-one years, Walter E. Brown died in 1999. She is survived by a son and his wife, Stephen P. and Judy Brown and their daughters, Elizabeth and Katherine, all of Nashua, NH, a daughter and her husband, Susan P. and Joseph Demarest and their children, Greg, Lisa and Russell Demarest all of Newport News, VA, a stepson and his wife, Roger N. and Karen Brown of Feeding Hills and their children, Missy Brown of Palmer, Rick and his wife Nicole Brown and their children, Corey and Samantha Brown of Somers, CT, a sister, Hilda Sherwin of Bloomington, IN, a sister-in-law, Keron Sherwin of Salisbury, NC, eight nieces and nephews and eleven great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Agawam Congregational Church, 745 Main Street, Agawam, MA. Agawam Funeral Home is in charge.
