Melvin E. Sherwin formerly of this county and Miss Dodson of Columbia, Mo., were married at Berkley, California, July 15th. The groom attended the State University and after graduating there last January was given a place in the California Agricultural College as instructor. He had made plans to come back to Missouri this summer but duties kept him away so his bride went to California. The many friends of the groom extend congratulations.

Search is being made for Herbert Sherwin, a brother of Mrs. Anna Hoerning, of Iola, who has been missing since last August. He is known to have been in Kansas City, Mo., for three or four days during the latter part of August, and at that time advised his sister he was leaving for Iowa to work with a bridge gang. He has not been heard of since that time and Mrs. Hoerning is concerned regarding him. Herbert Sherwin is a member of Iola lodge No. 98, and members of the Order are requested to advise F. J. Trusheim, Recorder of Iola lodge No. 98, if they learn his whereabouts.

It is very sad news to the friends of Melvin E. Sherwin to inform them of his death at his home in Raleigh North Carolina, on Saturday, January 5. The cause of his death was spinal meningitis.
The first to learn of this sad news was H. W. Smith who saw mention of it in a Columbia, Missouri paper.
Melvin Sherwin came to Cedar county with his parents from the Dakotas in 1895 and grew to manhood at the family home south of town. Melvin was determined to have an education and those intimate with him and knew the circumstances know he fought hard for it and won. He attended the Excelsior school until he had completed the grades and then came to Stockton and took what high school work it offered back in 1901-03. He worked during vacations and saved his money for books and tuition. After he had completed the course in Stockton schools he worked all summer and accumulated about $100 which was all he had when he went to Columbia and entered the State University. There he worked at anything he could get to do met expenses while he studied agriculture. Soon the members of the faculty took notice to his ambition and determination to attend the University and aided him with work when ever possible. When he graduated he was tendered a position on the faculty of the College of Agriculture at Berkley, California. He remained there a year or more and was called to the same kind of a college in Maine where he taught agronomy in the College of Agriculture for the last eight years.
Prof. Sherwin's success in attaining such a station in life should be inspiration to every boy and girl who have any ambition to attend higher schools. What he did others can do if they will work and make the necessary denials he made. Stockton Public Schools should revere his memory.
At the time of his death Prof. Sherwin was about 40 years old.
He is survived by his wife and five children, one son and four daughters, the eldest child being 14 years old and the youngest 3.
His former schoolmates, old neighbors and friends and the men and women of Stockton who knew him and were proud that they could point to him as a former pupil of our schools are indeed grieved that he has been called from his labors so early in life. To the bereaved family and the brothers and sisters also deepest sympathy is extended.
