Miss Florence Keron Walker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvie Currie Walker of this city, and Sindey Thomas Sherwin, son of Mrs. Herbert Allison Sherwin of Greensboro and the late Professor Melvin Ernest Sherwin, were united in marriage here Saturday afternoon, August 2,in the First Presbyterian Church. The bride's pastor, the Reverend Chester Alexander performed the ceremony at five o'clock, in a setting of palms, baskets of white gladioli and croft lilies, and cathedral tapers in seven-branched floor standards.
Wedding music, given by Miss Josephine McLauchlin, organist, and Mrs. Kestal Phillips, soprano, included the following selections: "Intermezzo" (Maseogni), "I Love Thee" (Grieg), "Ave Maria" (Schubert), "Because" (d'Hardelot), and the benedictional response, "O Perfect Love" (Barnby). The traditional marches were used for the processional and the recessional.
Escorted and given in marriage by her father, the bride was attended by a maid of honor, Miss Hazel Walker, her sister. The bridegroom's best man was William J. Cates of Greensboro, Herbert A. Sherwin, Jr., of Greensboro, brother of the bridegroom, and Ralph Gass of Greensboro and Winston-Salem, were ushers.
The bride wore an original design in white satin, which was fashioned with lace yoke outlined in satin ruffles, short puffed sleeves, fitted bodice, and bouffant skirt. Formal mitts in the same lace which trimmed the gown, and a fingertip veil falling from a coronet of orange blossoms completed her ensemble. She carried a nosegay of white roses and gardenias, showered with tuberoses and tied with white satin. Her only ornament was a string of pearls, gift of the bridegroom.
Miss Hazel Walker, her sister's maid of honor, was attired in a gown of nile green marquisette, with which she wore matching mitts and picture hat. Her flowers were mixed summer blossoms.
The bride's mother chose a street-length dress of black crepe, complemented with gardenias worn at her shoulder. Mrs. Sherwin was in an afternoon dress of rose crepe; and her flowers were gardinias, Mrs. W. D. Florence, aunt of the bride, who received wedding guests at the church, wore black crepe and Briarcliff roses.
Following the marriage service, Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin received their friends' at the church entrance, before leaving for a wedding trip to Niagara Falls, New York, and resorts in Canada. For traveling, the bride changed to a black faille suit, with which she wore black and white accessories and gardenias.
Mrs. Sherwin was graduated from Elon College where she was a member of Pi Kappa Tau sorority and Pi Gamma Mu, national social science fraternity. During the past four years, she has been a member of the Guilford Country and Burlington city schools faculties; and this fall, will teach in the Greensboro schools.
Mr. Sherwin attended North Carolina State College, Raleigh, served three and a half years in Europe with the Signal Corps and is now connected with the Sherwin Feed and Seed Company, Greensboro.
Following the wedding rehearsal Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey C. Walker, parents of the prospective bride, entertained wedding personnel and family members at a cake cutting at their home on the Greensboro highway.
The bride's table in the dining room was centered with an arrangement of white flowers and greens, flanked by white candles; and appointed with a tiered cake, a crystal punch bowl, and compotes of bridal mints. Wedding cake and lime punch were served by Mesdames E. B. Huffines and Lester Owen, assisted by Misses Betty Florance and Mary Louise Huffine. Miss Lila Newman presided in the gift room at the bride's register.
