Age 90, died suddenly on February 7th. The widow of Ralph R. Spillman, a former professor of English at Georgia Tech, Mrs. Spillman was involved for many years in community service projects. She was an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church for over 50 years and for several years served as president and teacher of the church's Richardson Bible Class. Ernestine Sherwin Spillman was born in Raleigh, North Caroline, the second daughter of seven children, the daughter of Melvin and Edith Dodson Sherwin. She received a B.S. degree from Women's College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) in 1934 and then taught elementary school at nearby Stokesdale, where she met Ralph Spillman, a fellow teacher. She and Ralph were married in 1942. During World War II, Ernestine lived in Washington and worked at the Pentagon while Ralph performed alternative services. In 1945, she and Ralph were able to reunite in Atlanta, where Ralph had obtained a position at Georgia Tech. Ernestine returned to elementary school teaching for several years and then raised a family, finding the time as well to do charitable work with the March of Dimes and other organizations and to perform many duties at St. Mark Church. When her children were grown, Ernestine did substitute teaching and became even more active in the church, where over the years she has taught Sunday School classes, arranged flowers for many occasions, and worked in the church's homeless shelter. Ernestine lived independently, had many friends and many interests, and remained active up to the time of her death. She is survived by two sisters, Hilda Sherwin of Bloomington, Indiana, and Dorothy Brown of Agawam, Massachusetts, by daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Bruce Burch of Nashville, Tennessee, by son and daughter-in-law David and Carolyn Spillman of Atlanta, and by four grandchildren, Sarah Burch, Matthew Burch, Scott Spillman and Paul Spillman. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary of St. Mark United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 15, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. A visitation with the family will be held following the service in the church's Wade Hall.
