R. S. Sherwin To Receive Award

Appreciation Certificate From Dept. Defense To Be Presented At Dinner

R. S. Sherwin, vice-president of Reynolds Metals Company, has been awarded a certificate of appreciation by the Department of Defense for services rendered the United States government on a trip to Germany in 1945.

Presentation of the certificate will take place at a dinner given in Mr. Sherwin's honor by Basil Horsfield, vice-president of Reynolds Metals company, at the Muscle Shoals hotel tonight at 6:30 o'clock.

The award will be presented by Colonel Paul Singer, Chief of the Alabama Military district. Other guests at the dinner will include high army and state officials and close friends of Mr. Sherwin.

On his trip to Germany, Mr. Sherwin headed a group to investigate methods of producing aluminum in Germany during the war. He wore the uniform of the U. S. Army and was sent at the request of the Technical Industrial Intelligence committee.

Later Mr. Sherwin supervised the setting up of an alumina research laboratory to determine best processes for treating bauxite ore from Jamaica and Haiti in the United States.

Ralph Sidney Sherwin was born in Waseca, Minn., in 1876, his family moving to South Dakota when he was four, his father being a farmer. The family later moved to a farm in Stockton, Cedar County, Missouri. He attended Southwestern Kansas college from 1898 to 1901, then the University of Oklahoma where he graduated in 1903 with a BS in chemistry.

Mr. Sherwin worked for the Pittsburgh Reproduction company, which later became the Aluminum Company of America. He was chief chemist of the plant in East St. Louis. He became associated with Reynold in July, 1940, to supervise the design and construction of the plant at Listerhill.

Mr. Sherwin is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Ralph S. Sherwin

Funeral services for Ralph S. Sherwin, 80, retired vice president of Reynolds Metals Co., a resident here 3 years, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Cage-Mills Funeral Chapel.

The Rev. Barcus Moore, pastor of St. Luke's Methodist Church, will officate. Burial will be in Seaside Memorial Park.

Sherwin died early Tuesday at his home, 910 Catalina Place. He was one of the nation's leading authorities on alumina production.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Ralph S. Sherwin, Jr., who is manager of the Reynolds Company's La Quinta plant; two daughters, Mrs. Richard Toon of Des Moines, Ia., and Mrs. Elbert Sargent of Palo Alto, Calif.; two brothers, Edward of Elka City, Okla., and Herbert at Greensborough, N. C.; a sister of Denver, and nine grandchildren.

The family has asked that donations be made in the Heart Fund in lieu of flowers.

Mrs. Ralph S. Sherwin Sr.

Mrs. Ralph S. (Elizabeth) Sherwin Sr., 97, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Wednesday in a Des Moines hospital after a lengthy illness.

Her husband, who died in 1957, was a retired vice president of Reynolds Metal co. and the Sherwin Alumina Plant here was named for him. Their son, Ralph Jr., now of Richmond, Ind., was manager of the plant.

Besides the son, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Richard Toon of Des Moines and Mrs. Elbert Sargent of Los Angeles, Calif.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
