Obituaries

Fitchburg Sentinel, June 11, 18851707

New Ipswich.

Appleton academy closed, last week. During the past year two of the former principals of the academy have died. In Zumbrota, Minn., on Tuesday, May 5th, Rev. Charles Shedd died, aged 82 years, 6 months and 14 days. He was born in Rindge, N. H., Oct. 21, 1802. He graduated from Dartmouth college in 1826. He turned his attention at once to teaching and was principal of Kimball Union academy at Meriden, N. H., until 1834, when he removed to New Ipswich and was principal of Appleton academy until 1841, when he resigned. The same year he removed to Campton, N. H., where in 1842 he was ordained pastor of the Congregational church at that place. In April, 1857, he removed with his family, except two sons, who preceded him in the autumn to Zumbrota, Minn., where in June following he assisted in the organization of the Congregational church there and at once became its pastor. In 1858, he removed to Mantorville, where he organized a church and resided until about 1874. In that period he organized churches, also at Wasioja, Claremont, and Hamilton, of Minnesota. His work was now done as a pastor, although during his residence of six years, or until 1880, in Waseca, he often supplied the pulpit. In 1880 he again removed to Zumbrota, Minn., to reside near his son, Henry E., who also died, February last. The last time that he preached was June 25, 1882, when hepreached at Zumbrota, being the quarter centennial sermon upon that anniversary. It was a very able discourse and well delivered, but too much of an effort for a man over 80 to perform. From that time he slowly declined in bodily and mental vigor. As a teacher, Mr. Shedd was critical and thorough. As a pastor he was efficient. He was always patient, zealous, bearing good will and love to all. his character was a very transparent one and at the same time very firm. He always commanded respect and particularly with his brothers in the ministry. Mrs. Shedd, who has shared with him all these years in his labors, his joys and his sorrows, at 81 years, survives him, as also a son and two daughters.
