Bedford, July 3 (Special).—Eugene Whipple, of Bedford, was killed in an automobile accident near Farmville tonight, according to a message received here late this evening. Whipple, accompanied by McHenry Nance and Charles Whipple, Jr., left here this evening for Virginia Beach to spend the week-end.
Details of the accident were not available but it was reported several cars ran together on a bridge. Nance is reported to have suffered a broken arm.
Whipple, who was about 30, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. David Whipple, of Brownsburg. He had been here about a year and was employed by the Bedford Motor Company. He was a nephew of Charles R. Whipple, of Bedford.
The collision, said to be an almost head-on smashup, occurred when an automobile driven by Hugh Long, who was slightly injured, en route to Lynchburg, came down the approach to the bridge meeting the Whipple machine, a heavy sedan, as it was about to enter. The impact swerved the latter car, and it continued its course to a point about the middle of the bridge where it crashed through the guard railing, and tumbled into the river about 30 feet below.
