DISPUTE OVER DOGS RESULTS IN A KILLING

Goodrich Whipple, Well-known Brownsburg Man, Fatally Shot by Sam Carter, Negro Resident of Same Town.

An argument starting over a dog fight, Goodrich Whipple, twenty-five years of age, a member of a prominent Brownsburg family, was shot to death by Sam Carter, forty-five-year-old Negro of that place, yesterday afternoon between five and five-thirty o'clock, it was learned last night.

It was stated that young Whipple, a son of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Whipple, was returning from a hunting trip into the nearby country, when a dog belonging to the Negro, began fighting with the Whipple hunting dog. An argument ensued between Whipple and the Negro, and it was stated that Carter returned to hi home, in front of which the argument occurred, procured a shotgun, and fired point-blank at Whipple.

The entire load of shot entered young Whipple's neck, death following shortly.

Feeling Runs High

Feeling was running high in the Brownsburg community against Carter, it was said, and he was speedily placed under arrest by Rockbridge county authorities and removed to the Lexington jail for safekeeping.

Young Whipple attended Randolph-Macon academy for several years, being a football star while at that preparatory school. He later attended business school in Columbia, S. C. and for some time was employed by the Goodyear Rubber company, in Akron, O. He had been at home for some months prior to the fatal shooting.

He is survived by his parents, his father recently having returned from the mercantile business in Brownsburg; by three brothers, D. W., Douglas, and Fred Whipple, and by two sisters, Dorothy and Eleanor Whipple.

Another brother, Eugene, former assistant cashier of the Bank of Brownsburg, was killed in an automobile accident two years ago.

Funeral arrangements for young Whipple had not been completed last night, but it was said that the funeral will probably be held Monday. The family has been prominent in the work of New Providence Presbyterian church.

Young Whipple was well-known and popular in many sections of the state.
