AUTO AND TRAIN MISHAPS TAKE TWO LIVES

FARM WORKER BECOMES 19TH TRAFFIC VICTIM

Switching Accident Kills Elhart Man.

A pedestrian perished in a traffic accident on state route No. 2 late Tuesday night and a railroad worker died in a late afternoon switching accident in the New York Central system yards in Elkhart, Ind.

The dead: William Johnson, 42, transient Negro farm worker became the couny's 19th traffic fatalaity of the year when he was struck by an automobile near the recently opened outdoor theater about 10 o'clock.

William Alexander, 47, of 1707 Perkins avenue, Elkhart, New York Central system brakeman was killed instantly shortly before 4 o'clock Tuesday when he feel beneath a freight car in the Elkhart years of the railroad.

Deputy Coroner Raymond E. Nelson said that Johnson died almost instantly when he was struck by a westbound automobile, driven by Edward Rajaski, 20 rurual route No. 2 Grant road, about 200 yards west of the drive-in theater. Johnson suffered internal injuries and fractures of both legs.

Deputy sheriffs said that the man apparently was crossing the highway to spend the night in a barn, where he had been sleeping. Rajaski was not held. The bady was taken to the Woolridge funeral home.

Body Severed at Chest.

Elkhart police were told that Alexander was trying to couple two freight cars when a switch engine pushed other cars in the two on which he was working. He was knoced down and one of the cars passed over him, severing his body at the chest. The mishap occurred in the yards between Oakland avenue and Nappance street.

The switch engine crew was compsed of George Schuler, 1032 Hubbard avenue, engineer; Leslie Marjason, jr., 132 North Sixth street, fireman, and E. I. Whitmyer, rural route No. 1, Edwardsburg, Mich., conductor. The first two are from Elkhart. J. P. Brick, 1311 North Michigan street, Elkhart, discovered the death.

William Alexander was born July 31, 1900, in Wabash, Ind., son of Jacob and Clara Stanbough Alexander. He married Betty Ethel Birt Nov. 24, 1925, in South Bend. Surviving are his widow; six children, Clarence W., Robert F., Effie Jeannette, Jacob Lee, Laura Mae and Ruth Esther, all at home; his mother, now Mrs. Clara Wittum, of Wichita, Kan.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Chamness, of Warsaw, Ind., and five brothers, George, of Illinois, Theodore of Utica, Mich., Orville, of Huntington, Ind., Ernest and Eli, of Wabash.

Switchman 24 Years.

Friends may call after 7 p. m. today in the Walley funeral home where services will be held at 1:30 p. m. Friday, Rev. Russell Hoppes officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Street cemetery.

Mr. Alexander was employed as a switchman and conductor by the New York Central system for 24 years.
