Herbert James Buffum, sixty-eight, of Jennings Rd., Town of Collins, formerly of Eddyville, died Saturday, September 7, 1963 in Veterans Hospital, Buffalo, following an extended illness.
Born May 31, 1895, in Colden, he had lived in Collins the past four years and prior to that in Eddyville for eighteen years. He was a farmer.
He enlisted in Salamanca Sept. 26, 1917, and served in several hard-fought World War I battles in France, receiving his Army discharge May 23, 1919. He was a member of American Legion Post 531, Little Valley.
Mr. Buffum married Grace Steward April 28, 1920. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Robert F. Buffum of East Otto; five daughters, Mrs. Fred Neumeister of Hamburg, Mrs. Carl Lupica of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Josephine Oliver of Salamanca, Mrs. Laura Minekime of Gowanda, and Mrs. Allan Fleckenstein of East Otto; one brother, Wesley Buffum of Randolph; eighteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Thursday by the Rev. William Dunstan of Conewango Valley from the Briggs Funeral Home, Cattaraugus. The Little Valley American Legion Post will conduct military services at the grave in the Little Valley Rural Cemetery.

EAST OTTO—Mrs. Grace L. Buffum of this community, died Tuesday (Aug. 8, 1972).
Born Dec. 31, 1901, at Mansfield, she was a daughter of Edmund and Sarah Sprague Steward. She was the widow of Herbert J. Buffum.
Mrs. Buffum was a member of the Mansfield Grange, 1039; World War Veterans Auxiliary, 1359; W.C.Edmonds Firemen's Auxiliary of East Otto; Senior Citizens of Cattaraugus County; Golden Agers; and Pamona Grange of Cattaraugus County.
Surviving are five daughters: Mrs. Fred (Jane) Neumeister of Hamburg, Mrs. Carl (Doris) Lupica of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. James (Josephine) Walaski of Salamanca, Mrs. Laura Minekime of Mayville and Mrs. Allan (Rosina) Fleckenstein of East Otto; a son, Robert Buffum of Springville; 20 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Steward of California and Roy Steward of Salamanca.
Friends are being received at Weismantel Funeral Home Inc., 271 E. Main St., Springville, today and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held there Saturday (Aug. 12, 1972) at 1 p.m. The Rev.. Edward Armitage, pastor of East Otto United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Little Valley Rural Cemetery.
