The marriage of Miss Opal Powers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Powers, north of the city, and Dale Barton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Barton, 1020 East Second street, is revealed here today.
The marriage ceremony took place on September 27 in Pawnee, where a justice of peace read the service.
Mrs. Barton is a graduate of the Norfolk high school with the class of 1942 and Mr. Barton attended the Cushing schools. Mr. and Mrs. Barton will reside in Cushing. Mr. Barton is employed here with the Warehouse Market.
Mr. and Mrs. Lafe Barton, parents of the bridegroom, honored the couple with a dinner given Wednesday evening at their home. Guests were limited to members of the two families.
Opal D. Kelly, age 83 of Cushing, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2008 in the Drumright Hospital, Drumright, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Church of the Firstborn, Cushing. Interment will follow at the Fairlawn Cemetery.
Opal was born on January 14, 1925 in Cushing to the late Benny and Bessie (Harris) Powers. She grew up in Cushing area and attended school at Council Valley School and later the Norfolk School High School, graduating in 1941. Opal was on the State Championship Basketball Team in 1941. She was baptized at the Council Valley Advent Christian Church. Opal married Dale Barton in 1941 and to this union Sondra and Shirley was born. She loved keeping her yard and her home. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for various companies over the years. Opal married Jack Kelly on August 31, 1974 in Miami, Oklahoma. Opal retired at age 55 to become a homemaker. She enjoyed helping others get started in life. Opal loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.
Opal is survived by her husband Jack of the home, daughters Sondra Sneed and husband Parker of Stroud, Shirley Teegarden Rubenstein of Cushing, step-children Jackie Dale Kelly of Union City, Patricia Williams of Perkins, Vickie Wenger and husband Gerald of Agra, sister Helen Austin of Kansas City, fourteen grandchildren including Shannon Teegarden and Kelly Grant, twenty one great grandchildren.
Opal was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Clifford, Kenneth, Harold “Buddy”, and Ben Jack Powers, sisters Alta Dooley and Elsie Thomas.10104
Jack Kelly, a longtime Cushing resident, passed away at his home on April 11, 2011 at the age of 87. Memorial services will be held 2:00 p.m.,Thursday, April 14 at the Palmer Funeral Home, Cushing. Inurnment will follow at the Fairlawn- New Zion Cemetery, Cushing. Arrangements are entrusted to Palmer Funeral Home, Cushing.
Jack was born on February 21, 1924 in Payne County, Oklahoma to the late George T. and Lutisha (Walker) Kelly. He grew up in Round Grove in Payne County, attending Ripley schools. Jack helped his father in the Cushing Grocery Wholesale for 18 years as the shipping and receiving clerk and married Martha Naomi Cooper in 1941. He later worked as a pipeline inspector for six years before returning to Cushing to marry Opal Powers in 1974 and purchase the Domino Parlor/Buckhorn Bar, which he operated for 13 years before retiring in 1987. He enjoyed horse racing, chicken fights and listening to gospel and country western music and taking care of his yard. He was a regular for lunch at the Senior Citizens Center where he also enjoyed visiting friends, talking about family and reminiscing.
Jack was preceded in death by his wives Martha Kelly and Opal Kelly, two brothers and two sisters, as well as one grandson and one great-grandson.
He is survived by his brother Clifford Kelly of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, his sister Alice McLaury and Wayne of Tulsa, his son Jackie Dale Kelly of Cushing, his daughter Pat Williams and husband Fred of Perkins, and daughter Vickie Wenger and husband Gerry of Agra, and step-daughters Sondra Sneed and husband Parker of Stroud, and Shirley Teegarden of Cushing, fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
Jack was loved by many and will be missed by all.10104
