WORK OF NEBRASKA PIONEER

H. H. SHEDD OF ASHLAND WAS PROMINENT IN STATE.

LIFE LEFT DEEP IMPRESS

ASHLAND, Neb., Oct. 7.—The funeral of Hon. H. H. Shedd, who died yesterday, will be held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock from the family residence, and will be private. To allow the large number of friends an opportunity to view the body the residence was opened this afternoon from 3 to 6, and many persons, including numerous friends from out the city, paid their respects to the dead. The funeral services, which will be very simple, will be conducted by Rev. William Carson, pastor of the Congregational church.

Hibbard H. Shedd was born January 27, 1847, at Denmark, Lee county, Ia. His father was Dr. George Shedd, one of the early settlers of Iowa, and prominent in its territorial history and in the anti-slavery movement, being one of the chief spirits in the "underground railway" and the beginning of the republican party. Mr. H. H. Shedd graduated from Denmark academy, the first denominational school in Iowa, and then taught school near Quincy, Ill. He enlisted in the Forty-fifth Iowa volunteers, serving in Mississippi and Tennessee during the latter part of the war. In the spring of 1870 he moved to Ashland and engaged in the mercantile business, continuing until his death, having been associated of late years with Mr. George L. Scott in the clothing business of G. L. Scott & Co.

From the time of his arrival in Nebraska Mr. Shedd took an active part in the religious, social and political life of his community and state. He was instrumental in organizing the Congregational church of Ashland, and acted as trustee, organist and superintendent of the Sunday school continuously from 1870 until practically the time of his illness, a service of thirty-five years. For a number of years he was a trustee of Doane college, Crete. He was instrumental in projecthig [sic] and planning the handsome new Congregational church now building, which will contain a beautiful memorial window to Mr. Shedd.

As a member of the constitutional convention of 1875 Mr. Shedd rendered valuable service to the state. He was a member of the Nebraska house of representatives in 1881, speaker of the house in 1883, and was elected lieutenant governor by the republican party in 1885 and 1887. From 1891 to 1903 he was president of the Ashland school board. As an orator Mr. Shedd enjoyed far more than a local reputation, having delivered many addresses in numerous western states. He was also the author of many memoirs and literary articles, and an active contributor and member of the state historical society. In all ways he was active in all that promoted the welfare of Ashland and Saunders county.

On February 18, 1874, Mr. Shedd was married to Katherine Leigh Graves at Cincinnati, O., to whom six children have been born. Four of the children are living, Misses Helen and Edith Shedd, Harry G. Shedd and George C. Shedd.

Mrs. Kate Shedd Dies After Heart Attack Friday

News of the death of Mrs. Kate Shedd, who passed away Friday after a heart attack, was received with sorrow by Ashland friends. Mrs. Shedd was a splendid woman, of the Christian character and high ideals.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Congregational church, with Rev. J. M. Dickey officiating. Interment was in the Ashland cemetery in the family lot.

Mrs. Katherine Leigh Shedd was born February 7, 1854, in Lockland, Ohio, and died July 3, 1936, in Kansas City, Mo., of a heart attack.

She was a graduate of Oxford college, Oxford, Ohio.

She was married to Hibbard Houston Shedd in February, 1874, and came to Ashland a bride.

She was the mother of six children, two of whom survive her, a son, George Shedd of Los Angeles, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Shofstall of Kansas City, Mo. She has one sister living, Mrs. Charles Schatzman of Cincinnati, and a granddaughter, Katherine Sizer of Winnetka, Ill.

Soon after coming to Ashland Mr. and Mrs. Shedd moved to the house on Boyd street where the family lived during their long residence in this city, and where the children were born and raised. Mr. Shedd died in 1905 and Mrs. Shedd went to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Shofstall, in 1923. She lived in Ashland practically fifty years.

Mr. and Mrs. Shedd united with the Ashland Congregational church in early life and were closely identified with the church interests during their residence in this city. Mr. Shedd served as Sunday school superintendent for twenty-seven years and as choir leader for thirty-four years. During these years Mrs. Shedd took an active part in the woman's work of the church. She was a member of the choir for many years and also a teacher in the Sunday school. For about thirty-five years she took charge of the communion service and saw that everything was in readiness for the serv[ing] of the Lord's supper. She was a faithful worker and much that was accomplished in the church during her residence here was due to her untiring efforts.

Mrs. Shedd was a charter member of the Ashland Woman's Club and served as president for two years. The club was formed to found a public library and Mrs. Shedd was one of the earnest workers who helped in this worthy undertaking. It was in her home that the library was finally turned over to the city of Ashland.

She also was greatly interested in the Cemetery association and all organizations and movements for the upbuilding of the civic welfare.

She was a remarkable woman in many ways. She had a keen mind, high ideals, strong human sympathies and a warm, lovable nature. She was a good neighbor and friend.

She never lost her interest in Ashland and the people here, and her frequent letters to friends showed that she still had their interests at heart.

She was ill but a short time, without suffering and retained her physical and mental faculties until the last.

Among the relatives and friends of Mrs. Shedd who came for the funeral service were George Shedd, Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Helen Shofstall, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Schatzman of Cincinnati; Wm. Sizer of Winnetka, Ill.; Mrs. Richard Shofstall and her sister of Kearney; and Mr. Harber of Omaha.
